Hi,

I'm having difficulty finding original list prices for the
Rick bass, 1975. I guess that was a 4001. Anyone know this
offhand?

Thanks,

itchy

I think he's after the original list price in 1975.

Which is difficult to find. I've found catalogues
http://www.rickenbacker.com/catalog_booklet.asp?pages=12&catalog=75

But nothing with a price list - well, there's a 1960's price list with
the UK price in guineas, but I suspect that is no help to the original
poster.

I'd suggest contacting Rickenbacker directly.

While we're talking about Ricks, any reason to get a 4001 over a 4003, or
vice-versa ?

Two main differences: (1) different truss rod design; (2) the 4001 has a cap
on the treble pickup that blocks some of the low-frequency response, the
4003 doesn't.

Both models have dual truss rods, which can be a little fussy and are prone
to breakage.

I love my 4001!

I paid $565 for my 4003 in 1985.

Saw the same bass on the wall at the Sam Ash in Richmond, VA. $1,995.

Coincidentally, mine is hanging on my wall. Not for sale, tho.

I'm so far out of the loop nowadays. Does the 4003 have Rick-O-Sound?

Here's a price list from '71.
It lists the 4001 at $498
I don't imagine the prices escalated too much in the next 4 years.

I got mine used 4-5 years ago for $1000. I play it more than I do any other
bass.

My brother bought his 4001 when I was in 6th grade, which would make
it 1978/79. I'm going by a vague 30+ year memory, but I seem to
recall him saying he paid $480.00 for it, new.

Hmmm, well....and I might be wrong on my recollection...seems I'd bought a new natural Precision about that time and it listed for less than $400. Rick had just introduced a white model and once I saw it hanging on the wall in Mobile AL....I just had to have it. There was a price tag woven into the strings..around $600..I expect this was based on the uniqueness and perhaps nothing to do with the MSRP. It came with the plushest case known to man at that time. Anyway, it was beautiful...for a few months. Then it broke out into small patches of red. Splotched...liked measles. Maybe the wood had not cured or ???. Mr. Hall and I had a few discussions about it and finally he relented. It seems mine wasn't an isolated case. I sent it back to the factory and they refinished it in black and left the black trimmings in place. Actually I was a funkster and R&B'er so it was all a moot point...sold it!

I bought one too around the same time, 3 or 400 to buy new
iirc, first 'quality' bass (lol) I owned. Nice basses but too
bland for me...mid range is almost non-existant.

I should add I 'customised' my 4001 - it was black, with
white piping and a white scratch plate which I changed for a
home made black scratchplate with white striped laminate
around the edges. I dare say it's worth a few bob nowadays.

Did one set on a 4001 which I took from my shop stock back
in the '70s, had to find out for myself.
Hated the sound and feel and finished the gig on Precision.
We're all different...luckily.

Best wishes to all...with one exception.

I bought a new P-bass in 1974 (that I still have) and IIRC, it listed for
$320, case $80, with 25% discount
got bass + hard case for $300 plus tax.

Back atcha Steve and all the best for 2013 and to all here....
with one exception.

WAL...another disappointment back in the late '70s.
Ordered one for my shop stock which really meant
it was mine if I liked it. It had weird false harmonics
and dead spots all over it that were not tweakable.
I really wanted to like it but it was a dog and went back
to WAL for a refund. Shame...I wanted something other
than Fender.
I ended up with an Aria SB100 PRO-II which is still my
favourite bass guitar, I fitted a Bartolini Musicman with
tap and Bart TB active and it sounds and plays great.
Earned me a lot of money back in the day!

That's a shame. I guess even Wal make the occasional bad bass, and late
70's must have been a pretty early Wal bass.

All the Wal customs I've ever played have been excellent basses,
especially fretless.

And at least they honoured their warranty and gave you a refund, not
sure Fender would ever have done that.

Those were nice basses.

I have a 1975 4003 bass. The 4001 has only a standard mono 1\4" jack, the 4003 has the standard 1/4" jack, as well as the ric-o-sound stereo jack.
