I've been listening to lots of old Grand Funk Railroad lately, basically
trying to relive my childhood. I've noticed tons of things about Mel's
playing that I didn't notice when I first started listening in my youth.
Man, he is a KILLER player. Anyone else a big Mel fan?

Yup!
He's the reason I got a J-bass... Me; is one of my idols.

Yup, him and Gary Thain when with Uriah Heep, were what (ahem)
rocked my world.

Mel is the man! I got to see them (w/Mark Farner) in 1998. Great show.

Hell yeah! I used to know a pile of bass lines off their first few albums.
Saw 'em live a few years ago and it was a lot of fun. Love his tone on those
early albums too.

Mel's bass line where also some of the first bass lines I remember learning for
CYO dances many years ago:-) I liked his sound from the live
album............nice and fuzzy...which in those days was easier to achieve
with sucky equipment than a clean
tone. Aloha, Jerry

Always, and still do think the bass line to Paranoid, on the GFRR live
double album was awesome!

The guitar player in my first band was a huuuuuuuge fan of Grand Funk
Railroad so I learned to know their music. In fact we played some of their
somgs as well. Well, I like other bands from that time better than GFR, but
I fully agree that Mel is one of the best bass players from those days - but
the best one in my opinion, I agree with you "Panhead, is Gary Thain. I.e.
listen to Easy Living, how he make a enouemous groove of a actually simple
song.

By the way, what is Mel Scacher doing today?

Mel is still playing and touring with GFR. Its him, Don Brewer, and a few
fill ins. I'm not sure what happenned to Mark Farner, but he is no longer
with them.

I remember seeing Farner on tour a few summers ago. I can't remember if it
was under the GFR name.

Mel sounds like he's playing a P? It's a real deep thump. Since I started
playing bass I have not checked him out. I think it's time.

As far as I can remember, mel always played a J-bass, through an Accoustic[?]
amp ( I COULLD be wrong on the amp), but today, he endorses Spector (5-string)

When they did a "Where are they now?" type of program on VH-1 recently on
Grand Funk, it looked like Mel was playing a Zon Sonus.....

Read an interview 3 years ago, at the time, he was happy with his Zons.

This summer I found a 1975 double live album "caught in the act" in a
novelty store in Pittsburgh, bought it for $1.00 woohoo!

Mel always played J-basses in the old days and now is a Zon endorser. I
believe he plays a sonus 4.
