Greetings. Delurking to ask for opinions on using an Ampeg V2 for
bass. I know it's a guitar amp by design and not a powerhouse in this
application but it's for home use. It would be paired with a
Fender-style 1x15 cab with a JBL D140F. I'd love to hear any opinions
and personal experiences with the V2. Thanks!

Junk....pure and simple for Bass. Buy a real Bass head.

Steve, They're a great guitar amp and should make a neat bass amp for
home/practice, but I think I'd only use it with the 1x15 and not push
it hard. Pushing it won't hurt the amp or the speaker, but it'll
distort out easier than a dedicated bass head.

It's 60 watts, so it's not that far off a Bassman. I've used
a Bassman-sized amp before for bass, and it wasn't bad.
Wasn't *loud*, but wasn't bad.

IIRC, there's not a whole lot of difference between the V4 and V4B (tone
stack caps and an "ultra low" switch that actually just cuts mids to
make the bass sound stronger???).

And, if I'm not mistaken, the V2 is pretty much a V4 with half the
output tubes and less power.

So, it ought to be close to being half a V4B.

Thanks to all for the responses. I bought the V2 last Thu. based on my
own intuitions. Your thoughts seem to be similar to mine. It'll be
fine for my needs. Sounds very nice but breaks up earlier than
expected. Bass has decent punch and tone, not that it couldn't sound
better. I plugged in a Telecaster (guitar, not bass) Thu. night and
was less than impressed but I hadn't really given the tubes a chance
to warm up. I tried the Tele again and an Epiphone Sheraton yesterday
and was more pleased. Bad news is that the amp has some random and
intermittent crackling and popping. Also the reverb isn't working. No
problem. I was planning a trip to my tech anyway. Bottom line: I think
I'm going to be happy with the V2. Thanks again for all your input.
You guys are great!

Steve
