I would love to have a set of Lane Poor 3.5" wide aperture pickups, but they
are not available. These pickups give a nice, clear 'acoustic' sound
without much coloration. Anyone with experience with these can recommend
something similar? (No EMGs please).

IMO EMG's (sorry but it's the truth) are the closest I've heard. Like Lane
Poors, when they sound good in an install they sound very good. When they sound
bad...

Ouch. There's an MTD floating around with LPs that about as unimpressive a bass
sonically as I've come across.

OTOH someone may love the "clarity".

I've AB'd LPs and EMGs in my Swamp Ash Jazz Bass and kept the Lane Poors.
The EMGs sounded nothing close to the Lane Poors, which were very
transparent, and showed the woody quality of my bass. The EMGs on the other
hand, gave a classic "Rock" sound to my bass, which in itself is not bad if
that is the sound you are going for, but I'm sure they would make any other
bass sound that way too, regardless of the wood.

I met Lane about four years ago and visited him down in Fall River a couple
times, He is a great guy. I hope everything is OK with him. He made the best
pickups, period. I really can't say if there is anything close to his being
made nowadays, but definitely NOT EMGs.

Last word I had was Lane's demise was due to drugs. I had this from a
reputable source. The whole pickup thing was sucked into the vortex.
Really too bad, I love my Lane's in my Dolan bass in combination with the
RMC bridge. Best sound I have ever had.

OOP's, I don't want to make it sound like he is dead. Just business demise.

OTOH one of the best sounding Foderas I've ever played was an older Walnut
Monarch with a PJ EMG setup. Sounded very warm and woody, much to my
surprise... I've rarely cared for EMG setups. Sounded very close tonally to my
Anthony Jackson Contra with stock Fodera/LP pickups.

Hmmm, what I am reading about these is very interesting. Thanks!

Too bad. Drugs? are you sure? He told me he got pretty messed from inhaling
solder fumes which affected him physiologically, back when he was working
for that speaker company on the west coast. The man had a niche for
bi-radial pickups and on-board preamps (which I also own).

I wish him well and pray for his recovery.

That's the thing about Lane Poors, they are uncolored. I didn't say they
make any bass sound great. They made MY bass sound great because it is
constructed of quality woods and parts and that is what I wanted to hear.
BTW, what a fundamental! I have never heard a bass with a better one.

If you install a set of LPs on a plywood body and 2x4 neck you will get the
exact sound of the wood, good or bad. Sometimes the 'formula' for good sound
defies conventional wisdom.
