Canadian music stores?

Can anyone point me towards Canadian music stores (besides Steve's),
preferably online? After discovering musiciansfriend.com doesn't
ship outside the US I'd like to ideally find a shop that would match
competitors prices.

Are there any "superstores" (online or otherwise) in Canada like
Guitar Center et al? I've shopped at Steve's before and have been
pleased, but they don't have prices online - getting individual
quotes over email is a hassle. My local Steve's (Ottawa) isn't big
enough to have a good selection in the showroom - would it be worth
my while to visit Steve's in Montreal or Toronto?

And on a related note - anyone know where the nearest US music
superstore showroom is in relation to Ottawa? I can cross into NY
state at Cornwall, ON or through the Thousand Islands.

Thanks all

Here are two:

Long & McQuade has a few stores across Canada (no prices online). The
Toronto stores have Ibanez, Fender, Warwick, MusicMan and Modulus in
great supply, with a smattering of Ricks, Spectors, etc. For amps, they
have G&K, Yorkville, Eden, with a smaller showing of Ampeg, SWR, Mesa,
Ashdown, etc. Toronto store is spacious (with stools!) unlike the
crowded Steve's, and the guys there are nice and helpful.

Club Bass in Toronto (you have to call first) is a little boutique
shop with some great stuff--in particular EA amps and cabs. They're
also our local Lakland dealer.

Here's a smaller dealer but I've heard very good things about them:

There is Axe Music http://www.axemusic.com/ which has
stores in Calgary, Edmonton and Alberta. They have a
web page http://www.axemusic.com/specials/ for the
specials that they offer, including the special prices
on some guitars and basses.

When I was living in Ottawa, I wanted a 4-string, 35"
scale electric bass guitar. The bass at the top of my
list was a Peavey G-Bass.

I went to Steve's Music in Ottawa to find out that they
only had 34" scale basses in the store. They could order
a 35" scale bass for me to examine from Steve's Music in
Montreal. If I recall correctly, the computer only had
5-string basses in stock for a 35" scale. (I believe
Montreal is where Steve's in Ottawa gets all of their
stock.) If I did not like the bass, then the bass would
be put on display to sell.

I could see this situation dragging on for weeks. And,
I disliked the buying/selling situation of "one at time"
examination.

The Peavey web site had a store locator and provided a
list of Peavey dealers in the Ottawa area.

I tried St John's Music on Carling Avenue. I think that
they had five basses and none of them from Peavey. Three
steps into the store, one glance to look at the five
basses, and a spin on my heel to head out.

I tried Lauzon Music http://www.lauzonmusic.com/ on
Wellington street. The store has pianos near the front
door like tank traps blocking the route to the guitars
on the walls. Too opulent for a guitar store, probably
just right for a piano store. The electric bass guitars
were in a room at the back of the store. They had a few
Peavey models but not the G-Bass. (When no one was look-
ing, I touched a Peavey Cirrus. Too much money at the
time for me.)

If I remember, the prices on the bass price tags were
all marked down from MSRP to an in-store special price.
Just enough of a mark down to offer the illusion of a
deal while still maintaining a good profit margin.

I asked the salesperson about the price of a G-Bass if
I ordered one, and then I left.

Axe Music had a special on a Peavey G-Bass. I telephoned
them. The price including shipping was still a hundred
or so dollars below the verbal quote from Lauzon Music.
The only annoyances from my encounter with Axe Music was
that a) the shipper was not present when I telephoned
and would have to get a quote from the shipping company,
and b) the salesperson had to go through the corporate
HQ to get my credit card purchase authorized for some
unknown reason. After two days of paperwork, my bass
was shipped out to me.

For a music store which is south of the border, previous
threads have talked about House Of Guitars in Rochester,
NY. Do a groups.google.com search on House of Guitars to
look at some past articles. A google search revealed
their http://home.rochester.rr.com/rrours/ web page.

Perhaps if/when I return to Ottawa in the fall, a bass
"road trip" to the US is in order. But, dreams of a
custom bass are forming in my mind so I may be searching
to find a luthier near Ottawa and beyond.

Long and McQuade opened up an Ottawa location in 2001 - Bank and Walkley
area. Much nicer store than Steve's on Rideau...better prices, well,
depends. L&M has an excellent stock of basses - Fender, MusicMan, etc. and
amps - Ampeg, SWR, Fender, etc. I've been into L&M for every major purchase
I've made in the last year, but ended up buying a SansAmp from Steve's (in
stock, same price), a bass and an amp from St. John's (MUCH better prices
than Steve's or L&M - as long as there's stock - and there usually isn't)

In my opinion, L&M is in direct competition with Steve's but Songbird has a
better website than both stores put together (www.songbirdmusic.com) and
lists (used) gear in both the TO and Ottawa stores.

Like Steve's, L&M has no online pricing, but go and check out the store and
play every guitar....
