My wife always bemoans me hankering after new gear...I've been trawling the
depths of my memory and this is all I can remember owning, not much over a
25 year period really. I know there have been many more, but the sad thing
is, is that I must have wanted those guitars so much at the time, but I
can't remember them. Jesus, I'm just 42.

Arbiter SG bass (sold locally)
Sunburst Columbus Jazz Bass (sold locally)
Unknown Rickenbacker 4001 copy (traded in against a...)

Living the life of a "starving artist", I didn't own much until the late
'90's. Until then, I gigged with exactly FOUR basses:

'83 Fender P Elite, Inca Silver, Single split. Used it all through my top 40
days and college. Never really had the sound I wanted so I traded it for
a....

G&L L-5000 (?) 5 string. Had a Bart P/J set that somebody wired up rather
shittily. When you breathed on the blend control, the volume would suddenly
cut by half. I took it to a few luthiers, and no one could figure out the
problem. Also, I couldn't seem to find a D string with enough length for
the 5 on a side tuners. Sold it and bought a...

'96 Fender Mexi Jazz. A/B'd it with a dozen other American, Mexi and Jap
fenders, and this one came out on top. I needed a fretted bass as a backup
on the road. Used it a lot on the road for funk tunes, and it sure as hell
came in handy when I got tendonitis on the gig. When I moved to Charlotte,
I grudgingly sold it to build up the down payment on my house. I rarely
used it anyway, because I've always played my....

'75 Fender Jazz Fretless. I got this bass for $125 in '91, and did a bunch
of mods to it - including fitting it with an '82 Bullet fretless neck (the
rest of the Bullet has long since been lost). This was my main bass for
almost 10 years. It pains me that I don't have any gigs to use it on now.

Now, I own a ton of crap/tax writeoffs that is too long to list here.

1965 Silvertone acoustic guitar. The cheapest one they made. $20.
Inherited it from my brother. Looked, sounded and played like crap,
and I wish I still had it.

1965 Mosrite Ventures model guitar - recently sold it on Ebay but had
it since I was 10. Not much of a player but sounded great.

1964 Framus solidbody - My first bass. Too bad it sucked. Neck was
way too thick and the sound was too thin. I converted it to a
fretless, then left it too long in the garage where it got ruined.
Finally had to throw it out. Dumb.

1973 Alvarez acoustic guitar. Budget model. Looked great, sounded
pretty good, played horribly. Traded it for a wah wah pedal and
tuner.

1974 Fender Precision. My first real bass. Natural with maple neck.
Unfortunately, it wasn't the best version of a P-bass ever.
Refinished it twice before leaving it bare wood. Replaced the bridge
with a Schaller, replaced the pickup with Seymour Duncan stacked J
pickups, then EMG J pickups, which it still has. Recently made it a
fretless, and finally, it's a really good bass. Looks sort of like
Marcus Miller's Jazz because the black pickguard is cut similar to his
(total coincidence). Had I known crummy-ass 70's Fenders could get
$2000 on Ebay, I would have left it stock, but it would have sucked.

1960 Gibson EB-0. Came with DiMarzio Model One pickup. Not bad for
what it was. Wore the original finish off, sprayed it black.
Replaced the non-tunable bridge with a tunable bridge. Busted it at
the jack, then fixed it and painted it white. Promptly busted it
again at the same place shortly afterward. Currently sits in the
closet. Considering refinishing it to original spec and getting it
fixed the right way.

1984 Kramer Focus 2000 guitar. A budget Strat copy, but has a great
sound and feel. Still have it. Replaced the Floyd Rose without fine
tuners for one that had them, which is its only mod.

1980's Ibanez Destroyer. Bought it only because it looked cool.
Sounded like crap, though. Worst bass I ever owned. Sold it and took
a huge loss.

1991 Guitar Factory 5-string. Built by a couple guys in Orlando who
used to work with Michael Tobias when he lived in Orlando. Best
5-string ever. Mahogany body with maple neck that goes through the
body. EMG pickups, Kahler non-whammy bridge. Originally red, now
unfinished. Still have it but don't use it often since I don't like 5
strings anymore.

1995 Guitar Factory 4-string. Same woods, smaller body shape, EMG's,
Kahler whammy bridge, Sperzels. Like it a lot but the neck changes
with every temperature change so I have to tweak the truss rod every
couple months.

1970's Epiphone acoustic guitar. My biggest bargain. A great
sounding and playing cheapo acoustic shaped like a D-28. Not quite in
a Martin's class but records very well.

2000 Fender P copy. Bought parts off Ebay and built this bass. It's
all cheap parts except the pickup, which is a 62 reissue. Seafoam
green. Has flatwounds that are going on 4 years old. Pretty good for
a bass assembled from crummy Ebay salvage parts.

1980's Bradley Steinberger copy. Made out of wood (poplar, I think).
Just bought it off Ebay. Replaced crummy original pickups with old
DiMarzio J's (would like to replace them in the near future, though.
Good bass for a cheapo. Bought to have something easy to get through
airports. Probably won't use it, though, because of the next bass.\

1998 Fender USA Jazz. Just got this a month ago. Sage metallic green
finish, alder body, maple/rosewood neck. Completely stock except I
bought a new pearloid pickguard for it so I don't ruin the stock
pickguard, which still had the plastic protective sheet on it. Also
replaced the Schaller Straplock buttons with Dunlops. Absolutely the
best bass I have ever owned. I put this bass up against any of them,
from early 60's J's to Sadowskys. It's so good that I have a hard
time playing any of my other basses except the fretless.

I am probably done buying basses unless I can find an extreme deal on
a 60's hollowbody, a Fender Bass VI and a 12 string. Got no need for
any of them, though. Would also take a 6-string if someone gave me
one, but would never buy one. Actually I'll take ANY bass if someone
wants to give it to me.

I had a Burns 'Vista Sonic', my first real 'proper' bass guitar, sometime
around 1968ish. Nice neck IIRC and a rotary tone switch that had a 'Wild
Dog' setting! Not even close to a wild dog in tone, unless it was modelled
on an out of control Pekinese.

Great Thead!!!

1.) Harmony Short Scale Trad Burst fished from the garbage with a home made
plexigrass pickguard repair (1980-82 burned and smashed in my folks yard in
Jimi style)
2.) Ibanez Destroyer (1981 - 1988 defretted in 86 repainted in 87 sold to
guitarist of the day)
3.) Washburn headless Double neck (1986-1987 both necks back bowed, traded
in on Ric 4003)
4.) Ric 4003 Mapleglo w/Black trim (1987-88 ... stolen at a gig :( )
5.) Quest 4 string (1987-88 was gone before the Ric, reason escapes me)
6.) Ibanez EX404 dual reversed split P (1989-93 sold to a student. It was
actually a great sounding bass)
7.) Carvin LB75 (1991-95 sold for school money)
8.) 1989 or 90 Carvin LB75 (1992 traded for old Fender P)
9.) 1974 Fender P (1992 wanted a real P, used it for 1 set at 1 gig and
traded for a AMP BH-260... sucker weighed as much as 2 or 3 basses)
10.) Yamaha Cheap fretless (1994 sold to student)
11.) 1994 Hamer 5 string (bought and defretted in 1998 added some Barts in
2002 still own)
12.) Benavente 51 5 string fretted (2003 will own till I die)

13.) Benavente 51 6 string fretless (coming any day now - 2004)

I've got an eBay bass hopefully coming near weeks end (birthday gift to self
if it stays low) and an URB in need of paying off and picking up... but I
don't official own them yet..... YET! 8-)

Happy days indeed ~ a good band I saw aged 12 or so (any band at that time
with guitars and amps were a good band) influenced me more than anything
else to take up bass and he had a Burns Bison, even being nice enough to let
me have a little play on it, so I had to have one but it was the Vista
instead as it was a cheaper model.
I thought Wyman played a Bison but it's the Vox bass that I remember with
him mostly.

I'm assuming this is a list of the crap we've had on our hands over the
years...

Harmony Bass, single cut, single pickup?.. semi hollow howler. I recall
dancing on this one...

Sears Silvertone bass amp.. the piggyback model with two somethings.. tens?
What'd I know? it was silver!

Fender Bass VI.. sixties model, with whammy .. yeehaa..
I abused it mercilessly.

Fender Bassman amp head with two double twelve bottoms... fifty watts?
forty? underpowered for bass anyway. blew a lot of fuses.

Eko hofner beatle style bass, italian..I replaced the Bass VI with this..
duh.

There's something right here I'm missing again.
Jesus.. I must be senile.

Ovation fretless.. semi hollow.. I barely remember. took it back, I think..
should have kept it, really it was very nice.
Some kind of damn amp.. there's one in here I've completely forgotten.
weird.

Rickenbacker 4001. fireglo.. man what a bass. I miss it.

Kustom something or other.. the black sort of rubbery covered model, two
hundred watts? two fifteens..stood up really well for a long time. I sold it
and it crapped out.

Bradley P bass copy, chunky neck, nondescript p bass copy in look sound
playablility. but ok.

can I just add three or so Peavey single fifteen bass amps..you know the
ones, tnt, tko, et al. little workhorses, not very good sounding really.

Randall bass amp.. two fifteens, three hundred watts.. never got it off two.
LIked it though.

G&L L 1000.. was that it? ebony board.. single pickup four string..bitch of
a neck problem caused high action and not a very uniform or comfortable feel
at all.. actually, no big deal as this basses sound simply seemed... without
character somehow.

Peavey Foundations.. again, at least three I can remember. when good.. these
were pretty damn nice.. when bad.. pretty damn typical for manufactured
stuff..
a good one, with a nice straight board that's stable.. is a peach.
look for a used one.. you may be surprised.

and along with the Rick above.. Fender Precision bass.. one piece mahogany
body, brass nut, leo quann baddass II bridge, stock 80's fender split Pup,
rosewood board, flat white formica homemade pickguard over red mahogany and
walnut stain under clear satin finish, chrome knobs, tuners, rosewood board.
You can't tell I miss it?

*sigh*

some pedals, but not many in the past.. fuzzface from the sixties.. and
wasn't that a hoot with the Fender Bass VI..
mxr compressors and a couple of chorus pedals from somebody..

Esp Ltd b 50 bass
behringer bx3000t head
behringer bass v amp pro
X audio sound 2X10
legion sound 8X10

when I find the bass that's right these last ones will be my gig rig
probably till I croak.. maybe I'll put a power amp in the rack case and
leave the bx3000t for homeuse.

I may add a ultra tube whatevermacallit parametric eq from behringer..
bass into parmetric, parametric to v amp, v amp to power amp..
mono cab...

yours truly

ooh... lemme see.....I'm also 42 (for a few weeks more, at least) and I've
owned...errr...

Ibanez Roadster (active EQ model) bought in 1982, still own;

Mighty Mite jazz shaped fretless bass (solid walnut body and it weighs a
f'kin' ton) bought in mid 80's, still own but put a fretted neck on it a
while ago....still, I quite fancy another battle with my ears and
intonation;

Tanglewood 'curbow' 5 string bought just over 2 years ago, and of the three
I own this is the one I'd consider p/exing for a 5 string with more actual
body to it.

Still, each has done its little bit over the years.

65 or 66 Blonde Epi Rivoli

And 17 or so more guitars..
The only basses I ever sold were the Harmony and the Dan Armstrong,
both of which I now wish I had.. My wife has come to the bitter
realization that contrary to my mutterings otherwise, I will probably
never sell another guitar or bass.. She said she would not complain if
I will only buy a much bigger house...

Bob Sherunckle,
Not sure if you'll see this. If not anyone who can pass it on to Bob it'd be much appreciated. I inherited a ninja spider 335 from my late grandad in 1993. He was a great old style jazz and blues guitarist but had to give up when his fingers gave up. He gave me the guitar and I loved it. Sadly it was stolen a few years later, along with a couple of custom built left handers that belonged to my then band mate, John Wheatcroft(check him out on YouTube, he's mustard) and some Marshall heads, mics etc. Anyway I've been looking for the ninja for years. If anyone has it I'd really like to have it back. I'd be prepared to buy it back as the sentimental value means more. We know the scumbags that stole the gear so there's no worry on that score. Here's hoping and thanks in advance,Jon.

It's unlikely. The post you're replying to is 16 years old, while Google Groups
tells me Bob last posted here about 9 years ago.

This newsgroup is just about dead - people have moved to other forums, I guess.

I'm not quite sure why I dropped in - just like to see the tumbleweed blowing
past, I guess.

Mark, this place started decaying when that Canadian idiot started bombarding people with vulgar insults. Also came Facebook with its hundreds if not thousands of bass boards. The FDP closed its doors at the beginning of the year. Talkbass is sttill running, though.

Yeah, like you I still show up occasionally.
