Played a Yamaha TRB-5P (neck-thru with piezos in the bridge) five-string
bass today. Nice tone and good feel. Would like to know if any of my
bass brothers & sisters own, have owned, or played this machine and have
you had any problems with this machine (dead spots, bad electronics,
neck warping, etc.). Your unadulterated opinions are greatly
appreciated. C-ya!
I have a TRB-5P and I love it! Except the electronics are terrible,
it's the noisiest bass I've ever played. I wanted to upgrade the
electronics but still be able to use the piezo bridge. I have Seymour
Duncan actives in one of my other basses and love the sound, so I had
them make a custom setup for my bass because the P-J setup of the Yamaha
is not standard. I should be receiving the pickups and electronics next
week.

Well, I own a TRB-5P since two years ago. I had no dead spots, no bad
electronics, and no neck warping. The machine is really well made.
But I had some problems with sound, not really punchy on bass ranges,
especially when I played directly into the mixer (there were no amps!), the
sound was too much thin, even setting eletronics on the bass and
equalization on the mixer. This happened with some cheep amps too, like a
small Laney or shit like that, and once in a recording studio directly into
the mixer. However this lack of sound happened in big stages too, even with
powerful equipment. The sound from my SWR RedHead on the stage was good
enough, but not in the equipment. This didn't happen with another basses in
the same concert rig.
I had a good sound with a Trace combo: GP12, 4x10" 200W.
The best sound I ever experienced with the TRB5P was with : Preamp SWR,
powered to 400W, Goliath III 4x10" and Big Ben 15". A really punchy but
clear
sound!
I played a MusicMan StingRay 5, I think it has really a better sound. It's
warm and powerful.
I played a TRB-6P J.Patitucci Signature too.
I noticed a better sound, more power, and more accurate parecision on the
neck, and overall more playability.
Now I'm playing an Alembic Elan 6 strings with EMG. Do you know how heaven
is?

I got a similar bass (Yamaha TRB6) and it plays fine. Good tone, great
neck. The only problem is string resonance; when I play the C string
above the 15th fret or so the other strings start to ring, which is
annoying especially when soloing. :-(

Two thumbs up!, I have a TRB-6P that I love and a buddy has a TRB-5P
thats his main bass. I have never had a problem with mine, lots of tone
variations and great recording bass, very quiet. I hear Yamaha is only
going to be doing new ones on special order, I think only the 6P.
Good Luck, Willfunk
I LOVE my TRB6P(since 94) and a TRB5(since 97) fretless. The piezo is a
little sharp but nothing a little eq can't handle. Having a piezo pickup
around opens up a lot of sound possiblities. ( Just listen to bromberg,
wooten, laboriel)
The TRB6's neck is as straight as the day I got it. In consistent
temperatures, it's as stable as my graphite neck. (Zon). It does bends a
little in big temp change. But just a little. Electronics are still perfect
- nothing came loose, no crackling sound, no nothing.
The fretless is in the opinion the best instrument in its price category.
This bass really growls and the action setup feels really good. Tried a
musicman before I bought the Yamaha. It looked better, but the tone, build
and price wise, the TRB 5 wins hands down.
The only con is that the pickups are not as articulate and strong as my
bartolinis on the other bass. Bassists like sklar upgrades the pickups on
their Yamaha.
Go for it.
