I just received my latest "eBay special"... a funky looking (refinished in
this weird paint that looks mostly purple, with a green hue depending on
where the light comes from) Washburn RB2500 with black DR strings on (not
sure what gauge, but looks like a regular 40-100 from E to G). And it's
fantastic.

It's weird because I bought this on a whim. I have another 5-string which I
like, but it doesn't sound right and I bypassed the preamp to realise that
the pickups themselves are not great... and there isn't much choice out
there for 5-string MM style pickups, it's either low end crap, or rather
expensive stuff -and it has 2 pickups-which I feel reluctant to buy just to
see if this bass improves enough.
I was actually looking for a wide-spacing 5-string bass, and somehow I went
for this one RB2500, untested, which in addition has a pretty narrow string
spacing. And you know what? It doesn't really bother me. I slap a bit
(badly) and it's not hard, getting the finger in to pop requires a bit of
extra attention until I get used to it, but it's fine. And the narrower neck
means it's more comfortable and I can play faster/accurately.

Just one pickup, MM style, and very effective active EQ (2-band). I'm in
love.

I'm writing this because I often see the question about what's agood
inexpensive bass etc... and if you want a 5-string I think this is one to
look at definitely. I'm in the UK, but I've seen them going for very little
in the US.

And I shut up now.

Well, not quite... I never tried these black coated DR strings. They seem
pretty nice. I have no idea how long they've been on this bass and seller
hasn't told me yet. Anybody else uses them? Do they stay bright noticeably
longer than other brands? I have to say i like the way they feel.. and call
me vain, but it's nice to have them in colours ;-)

It's hard to photograph... it doesn't quite look like in the pictures, but
you get the idea.

It was black originally.

The strings (DR blacks) are about a year old I'm told... but they sound and
feel great.

Those are DR Black Beauties. I've used them on an OLP Tony Levin which
is my main workhorse for some years now, and I like them a lot. Very
lasting with a sweet singing tone.
I also have them on a black Fender Catalina acoustic guitar where they
look nice since even the plain strings are all black.
And recently I put a set of them on the '78 Precision fretless.

Looks nice. How do you like the strings? I was thinking of switching
from my TI Jazz Flats to something with a touch more tension
(remaining with flats, however). What do you think?

Well, I love these strings but... they're not flats. They're roundwounds.

Yep, "black beauties".

They are quite nice. Gauge seems to be 45-65-85-105-125, and if they feel
and sound this good after almost a year, I think the next bass that needs
strings will try a fresh set of DR Black Beauties. Well, or maybe the pink
ones ;-)

Hi, Jose. I use Black Beauties on most of my basses. I had used Hi-Beams for
over ten years. I switched when I signed an endorsement agreement with them,
at their recommendation that I try them. And I LOVE 'em! To me, they sound
like Hi-Beams that have settled in for a day and lost a bit of harshness
that they have right out of the wrapper. And then they last a
looooooooooooooong time. How long will depend on a lot of things, but I
think that, no matter what, you'll get a much longer life than normal.

Have fun with that new bass!

Hi Lane,

thanks for that.
Well, three days later into which I squeezed a lot of practice with this
bass have convinced me of two things:

1) I *really* like this bass, and I feel the Warwick falling our of favour.
In fact, I could use a 5-string as a main bass rather than being an
"option". If someone had told me this a year ago... hell, a month ago! I
would have not believe them.

2) I just ordered some DR Black Beauties for a couple of basses. It seems a
bit boring to talk about strings, compared to basses, but... there's
something special about these and I can't quite put my finger on it (I was
going to delete that, pun totally unintentional... :-)
