I was just wondering. I am considering getting either a Gallien-Krueger and
an
Ampeg head , both solid state. Which is a better head, for warmth, sound
quality and durability? What's your opinion?

Thanx

My Ampeg SVT III was much, much better than the GK 400RB I once had(sold it
after not too long). The GK had only 200 watts RMS compared to the 350 watts
of the Ampeg. The difference was in the headroom, where the GK clipped with
even my passive Jazz bass. I made sure I was not overloading the preamp too.
Tone-wise, the GK did have a good funk sound, with the mid-contour switch
engaged. The Ampeg, however, is the shit!! Any style of music sounds good
thru it, especially crispy, crunchy rock(with a pick) and funk(deep switch
engaged). The preamp has 3 tubes which adds alot of warmth, and the power is
solid-state for attack. There is, and I believe most ampegs have this, a
mid-frequency attenuator which shifts the mids according to the main midrange
setting. This is really useful for rock to cut thru guitars and loud
drums(like in my situation). My SVT came with a 3 year warranty. It did fail
on me one time and I sent it to Ampeg since I have no Ampeg dealers around my
area. I swear it only seemed like a week or more when I got it back, fully
functional. I thought it would take forever!!!! I was impressed! One of these
days I am going to invest in one its big brothers, either the SVT II(TUBES!!)
or the SVT VI. But for $600.00 new, I am quite happy with my SVT III.

matching 4-10 cabinet really sucks. It sounds very 'boxey.'

I own a GK 400B that I run through an EV2x10 cab, and 2 Ampegs, a new B100R
single 15 combo and an SVT proIII head with an SVT pro 4 ohm cabinet. The GK
definately holds the edge as far as more modern tones at a moderate volume
level (small clubs where you run through the mains). The B100R is basically a
poor mans B-15 portaflex. Only suitable for rehersals and downsize jobs (ex:
weddings, dinner music etc.). Nothing compares to the SVT pro III but you'll
drop a few bucks for that one.

I love these 'what's better?' posts. How 'bout this one........ What's
better a Camaro or a Firebird?

I'd say a Firebird with an Ampeg in the trunk.

I tried the SVT III Pro and found it a little weak. I settled on the SVT
IV Pro and find it to have a beautiful, rich sound with PLENTY of power!
When you get a chance, try the STV IV Pro.

WOW finally found someone who has the SVT IV Pro besides me. I had the
GK2000rb but the volume pot went bad so I sent it back. While I was waiting
for a replacement I tried the SVT-4, for about the same amount of money I
said cancel the GK and give me the SVT. Great sound, boat load of features,
lots o power, and very heavy.

can you fit an svt rig in the trunk of a firebird?

If it's an SVT IV Pro you can...of course the front end of the Firebird my
come off the ground, but it'd give you better traction.
