All,

I have had a Godin AcoustiBass (first fretless for me) for about 15 months,
and shortly after buying the bass I re-strung it with LaBella Deep Talkin
Bass flatwounds (the old strings were dirty from being played in the music
store). I did not like the tone of the new strings at first, but after a
few days of playing them they started to sound great and have sounded great
since. But now (more noticeable when I play un-amplified, something my
neighbors like) the bass sounds flat or dull. I'm wondering if I need new
strings (I'm not used to playing flatwounds on a fretless), or if something
else is going goofy(like the bass player...)?

So my questions are:
How often does everyone change their strings on their fretless basses?
What brand of strings are you using on your fretless basses ( I have liked
the LaBella 's but have heard good things about Thomastik Infeld strings)?

Thanks,
Bryan

Something that my old bass teach told me is to boil the strings in water for
a bit. It'll get most of the gunk off, and the strings will sound rather
new. They won't last as long, but they'll do you good for a while. And 15
months is a long time for strings, in my experience....

I change strings on my fretless every month or two. Elixir 45 100s. Sound
great, could last longer but I play an average 4 hours a day... lots of
gigs, and I just love the tone of new strings.

you should try them.

regards,

Ninn
