Hey guys, my amp has been acting up of late....I'm now in a metal/hard rock
band, and I do a lot of slapping, but when I slap on the E, it comes out
muted then fades in.... what's this called? clipping? and what's the answer,
besides turn down.....
and while I'm asking, is it bad that I see that little yellow light every
time I slap?
I'm using a Peavey combo, not sure what kind, its about 300 watts
thanks
Beau

haha... I wish it were that simple. I've heard the problem with one other
amp, a little light weight number, and I deemed that to be the
problem....too much input.... I don't use a Fender, I use either a 1978
Ibanez Roadster or a "Stage" Guitar HD1200 its a bass, looks like a Yamaha
copy....sounds like heaven to me, but the amp has been muting the first part
of the slaps on both basses of late....I'm playing louder now, I know that,
but is that the problem?
thanks
Beau

Ibanez Roadstar's are nice basses....back when Ibanez made their basses in
Japan....not Korea.

But, why does Fender always 'claim' that they 'made' the first bass? (in
fact the 'first bass guitar')

Yes, I know that bassists needed something smaller and compact, compared to
the stand-up bass, so Fender made a 'bass that could be played with
Precision(TM)'

Yes, I know the story about Leo Fender....who sold is company and then
paired up the George for G&L Guitars.

Yeah, you can clasify that as over driving....the DDT Compression is
probably kicking in to save your speaker (This is only a Peavey thing)

Is this yellow light called a 'clip' light? can it change any other colour,
like red? (because if it goes 'red', that's when your starting to do damage)

Might be the 'Combo 300' ?

The place I have my band practices has Peavey everything. The yellow light
tells you when you are playing to ruff, and it kicks in compression. I
forgot what know turns it down...but its toward the right. It starts with a
g.

ok so its compression, thats better than my worst fears expected....

no it can't turn red.....the red power light is broken though...ha.

might just be....I'll check it out, the truth is I don't care about the
stats of my gear as long as it can play the tone I want at the volume I
need.

thanks

The compressor on the amp is coming on because you are driving it too
hard. Unfortunately the answer IS "turn down" BUT you can do this with
an outboard compressor or limiter. Now that you have found the "tone"
that fits your playing style, you are finding that you can't achieve
the SPL. Again compressing or limiting B4 the input, will allow the AMP
to operate B4 AMP clipping. If you still don't think you are loud
enough, it may also be time to think about adding a cabinet. 300 watts
is plenty enough power for most gigs, but most speakers in combo amps
cannot handle the amps FULL output power, in the case of the peavey
combo 300, I think the output is limited to 100-150 watts B4 the built-
in compressor kicks to protect the speaker. When you add another
cabinet, usually in paralell, the amp is able to output more power,
and there is more power handling capability because there are more
speakers. If it is just a case of clipped attack, try out a few
compressors and or limiters in line B4 the amp input
