I recently found a 2 x 10 cabinet obviously made for a car "boom"
application. 11" deep 12" tall 34" long. It's a ported cab with a
small (approx. 2") port for each speaker. A center divider separates
the two compartments.

My question is could i install 2 10 inch bass speakers and have a
suitable set-up from it? My amp is a GK 400 RBIII 15" combo. The
internal 15 is 8 ohm impedence and it will drive another 8 ohm cab to
give a total of 240 watts of output. In order to get the required 8
ohm impedence, should i order two 16 ohm speakers and wire them in
parallel? Any other options? I'm looking for the amp to see a 4 ohm
load.

One more thing - what are some brands of 10" bass drivers that won't
break the bank but will give satisfactory performance.

Any and all help/suggestions the collective brain trust of this group
can offer will be gratefully accepted and appreciated.

p.s. A million years ago when I was playing in the typical 18 year old
kid band, I had an amp that I've never seen since. A gibson 800-B or
B-800 (can't recall the exact sequence). Solid state head of probably
60-70 watts with a cool colorful translucent lighted front panel and a
2 x 15 huge cabinet. Anyone remember these? I sold it and my rick 4001
for $400.00 when i got married. I still kick myself occasionally.

I ran it through Win ISD (an enclosure design program), assuming Eminence
Gamma 10's as the drivers, and with the ports enlarged slightly to 2.5 "
got it flat (within 3 db) down to 50 hz. This is all theoretical of
course but it looks to me as if it would probably sound o.k.

Here are the figures I got:

Number of drivers : 2
Box type : Vented
Box size : 136.0 l
Tuning frequency : 47.62 Hz
Vent : 2 vent(s)
0.55 in length for each
2.50 in round

Relative
Freq Gain SPL
[Hz] [dB] [dB]
20.00 -34.92 65.09
25.00 -26.31 73.70
30.00 -18.88 81.13
35.00 -12.33 87.68
40.00 -7.06 92.95
45.00 -4.02 95.99
50.00 -2.97 97.04
55.00 -2.69 97.32
60.00 -2.58 97.43
65.00 -2.46 97.55
70.00 -2.31 97.70
75.00 -2.16 97.85
80.00 -2.00 98.01
85.00 -1.84 98.17
90.00 -1.70 98.31
95.00 -1.56 98.45

How cheap? You can buy used (and decent sounding) Peavey or Carvin 2-10
cabs for under $200.

It might work just fine by dropping a couple of bass drivers in there -- why
not give it a try, and if it doesn't satisfy you, then go ahead and build
your own cabinet? You'd probably spend about $200 for a couple of decent
drivers, so it won't kill you to do it. But, as Brian Rost pointed out, you
can buy a real bass cab for about that price, so if DIY is not important to
you, maybe you'd be better off buying a used cab. Eminence drivers are a
good value.
