He was initially asking 350 buy it now. A bit optimistic, since it is a
standard (not the PRO model) Epiphone Thunderbird. The standard goes for
around 199 *new* over here. I ocntacted him asking whether I was missing
something, as it seemed to be the standard and teh prince was surprisingly
high. he replied with a simple "no".
I also pointed out that the "PRO" model is more expensive, at around 350
over here... but that this wasn't it. The PRO has neck-through construction,
active electronics... it looks a bit different and the controls of course
are different.
Funny how he doesn't show the neck joint in teh pictures...
However (I love this)... check his feedback. He just bought a... you guessed
it, an Epiphone Thunderbird IV, the standard model. Over there the pictures
show clearly it is a bolt-on, and the description shows what it is. He
bought it for 200 too... which is the new price, not the used price... so
not very sharp.
It looks like now he's trying to fool someone into buying his bass by saying
it is something different... He *knows* what he is doing, totally
deliberate.
Scum.
Of course I sent a note to eBay.

Current favourite bass: Warwick Corvette $$
Well. Of course it's special and deserves the higher pricing. After
all, look at what his ad starts off with.
"THIS IS A AXE "
See? It isn't just ANY "Axe" ....it is "A" Axe!
"PLAY LIKE THE WHO. OR ANY WELL KNOWN HEAVY METAL BAND"
In the pocket already! See, you don't need a Fender, Status or a
Warwick to get these amazing Entwisle, or Geezer Butler tones.
He's got it all right there!
So you see, it truely is a bargain at any price!

Truly a lot of people just don't get, for whatever reason, what their
used gear is worth - if they think they're going to buy and resell for a
profit on ebay, I think they're sorely deluded.
I went through sometime similar with a recent craigslist ad - for a
keyboard, but same basic idea. The person was asking $700 for a used
Yamaha P-85 keyboard, stand, and gig bag. I pointed out, complete with
a link, an online package of the same thing brand new (and actually
better because it had a better stand), for $670 and free shipping.
I then offered $500 but they were firm in their price - so I bought the
new package.
So the real question in my mind is whether people do things like this
because they're dumb, or because they're sharp and hoping to find a fool
as a buyer.

I think they're (usually) dumb enough to think they'll find a buyer
dumb enough to go for their deal.
Sometimes I'm wrong, of course.
You gotta feel for people sometimes when you know they (might) need
money in the worst way and are hoping to make rent or a car payment by
selling off something used at a top-dollar (plus) price. Mostly,
people go to ebay and craigslist trying to get a bargain price, so
sellers are starting off at something of a disadvantage.
However, "it's never certain" and we've all seen stuff go for high
prices once a bidding war starts. Just another reason to let the bids
come, the more the better, *usually* (it's never certain"). --D-y
I generally ignore emails like this as either assholes trying to nickel and
dime me, or ubergeeks who aren't going to buy anyway, but want to
demonstrate their superiority in the area of this particular item.
eBayers are dumb, but they're not stupid. There is ALWAYS someone willing to
pay the price you're asking. You just have to catch them at the right time.
There's a guy who keeps listng an Oncor guitar synth for a somewhat
decreasing but still absurd amount of money that comes to mind. He's been
posting the same auction for at least 2 years now...

Yes, I do. I sent the seller a link, and the keyboard has been here
since last Friday and was used in a rehearsal Monday night. I was
trying to get myself a good deal _and_ help out this person, who didn't
at all sound like a "power seller" - they just sounded like some parent
who had shelled out what I would have shelled out at the local GC: $630
for the keyb, another $100 for the case, yet more for the Z stand. I
don't blame them for asking what they asked - sure, go ahead and ask for
$700 for very lightly used equipment that you paid $850 for.

Never say always.

That's my point - if you're just some Mom just trying to get rid of some
gear you thought your kid would use, you don't _want_ to be putting the
same ad up on ebay or CL for two years running. It's like trying to
sell your 4 year old PC for half what you paid for it - just ain't gonna
happen, IMHO.
Hey, I _love_ the new keyboard - would have been happier buying the used
stuff for a $200 less, but that's life.

I'm completely baffled. In one post you say you tried, they said no,
and so you bought new, but this sentence seems to imply that they did
sell it cheaper, but further down you say you'd have preferred to get
the used one. So was this two different keyboards?

Sorry for not being clear - am dead tired at this moment and my day
isn't half over yet - I bought the new one. I sent an email, giving a
link to the new one for less money, they didn't change their price, so I
bought the new one a day or two later. I got the new one - would have
preferred the used one for a better price only because I'd still have
$200 in my pocket, otherwise I am very happy with the deal I got on the
new one. I think the entire business transpired over a long weekend -
email on Friday, got a "no" back on Saturday, sent one more email with a
link to the new stuff at the good price, got another "no", bought new on
Monday, arrived on Friday last.
