Just curious what players prefer, Picking every note or a legato
approach by selective picking with hammer-ons and pull offs? I go
through phases where I pick everything, then work on legato stuff. I do
it for the sound than if one is easier. Music first, technique
second.

I have found that playing prog music has helped me develop my alternate
picking far beyond anything before that I tried. Not to say that the genre
itself was responsible, but the attack, the severity and the desire to be
heard all contributed. I find that it's actually quite difficult to be
articulate when hammering - but that's just for me though.

Hey, whatever works I say!!

The only thing a bass player should pick is his nose. ;0

I find if it's sort of punchy funk it's much more effective and rhythmic to pick
most notes, but with most things that are anything less punchy I'd slip in some
sliding and hammering/pulling

You do of course know what picking means to a bass player, don't you?

It has precious little to do with picks or plectrums.

Now, I would normally nearly agree with that, but I have to admit that
when my band bursts out with the occasional "wall'o noise" distortion
(it's fun for a surprise in the middle of a jazzy bit ;D) I almost have
to pick to maintain any sort of clarity through the other instruments..

I was refering to picking with your fingers. I never use a pick. I
don't care if a bass player uses his fingers or a plectrum, as long as
the music come out. I never understood why some many bass players are
so against the idea of using a plectrum. What, is it cheating. Tell
that to Chris Squire, Andy West, Anthony Jackson or Mike Gordan.

Or Phil Lesh. By the way, where can I pick up a plectrum?

Whoops. I mean a graphite plectrum/pick thingy. Like Mike Gordon and
Phil Lesh use.

I never said that - but in the context of the bass and alternate picking,
it's invariably referring to the use of ones index and middle fingers in 1-2
1-2 patterns.

So shoot me for responding!
