The Slap Bass Program with Alexis Sklarevski (Video Progressions) is one
the best instruction videos i have ever seen.
When you're really a beginner it is best to go to a real bass teacher.
And of course : start playing in a band !!!

Yup. Lessons.
Gotta agree with that...lessons with a good teacher can help with all
manner of things. The extra value of having a teacher is that, with a
video or book alone, you don't know for certain if you're doing things
correctly. (your thumb's not quite right...your left hand position is a
bit off...etc.)
However, if you can't work with a teacher for one reason or another, the
best video I've seen on slap is the one by Alex Sklarevsky. The best
book I've seen is Tony Oppenheim's "Slap It!" which includes a CD of all
the exercises.
One thing about "Slap It!" is that Tony does not use the standard
"thumbs up" right hand position.
Hope this helps...

Another more recent book worth mentioning is "Funk Bass" by Jon Liebman.
It starts off with the rhythmic excercises and builds from there. When
learning the slap technique, it is VERY important to use a metronome,
and do not ignore the basic excercises, otherwise you will end up with
huge holes in your playing.
Good luck!
