Just about to order some Tung Sol 12ax7 New Production's from the Tube
Depot... are these guys reputable?

I Was going to order from Musiciansfriend who i have ordered from
before, but shipping is $34 to Canada (Fedex), its far less than this at
Tube Depot (USPS which i have had good luck with)

Also, is this extra $2 for "High Gain" a scam or what?

http://www.tubedepot.com/ts-12ax7.html
Is what i was looking at...

Three of them going in a marshall JTM30... i'm leaving the 6l6gc rca
blackplates in for now, i may take them out to store them for awhile and
experiment with something else, but for now they're staying in.

Thanks again.

There is always Lord Valve is you don't mind his politics. If you call him
for tubes or parts, he's all business unless you say otherwise.

Over at Amp Garage, they seem very high on Terry Kilgore a/k/a The Sarge
tkil...@tubetramp.com

I expect either one of these guys will fix you up, no extra charge for
personal service. Shipping to Canukastan is $34. I expect shipping to
Canada will be considerably less.

Psssssst.....I've got some high gain tubes; wanna see 'em? Special price
for you.

Yeah, I like the way those tubes have a smegma coating
on them and a hateful fascist vibe to them which is perfect
for death and destruction metal music of today, Fuck peace,
love and understanding! Not only that they make a really
smackeroo light show when they malfunction.

Hey Ed,
I've beem meaning to say "thanks" for mentioning the Sold-a-pult. I got one
on eBay dirt cheap and it turned out to be one of the higher end models. I
was taking apart a derelict amp tonight and it works like charm. I was in
the dark ages with the other one I've got. No comparison. Doesn't seem to
be coated with anything, either.

Everything is relative. I was using a really crappy solder sucker. I had

Now-a-days, everyone uses a *very* accurate means of matching power
tubes, so there's no good reason to pay more. On current, typical
guitar amp 9-pinners: NONE are really that fucking good. Go see Mike
Kropotkin (KCA) for some real ones - if you *care* that much. Come to
think of it, there's really only few new-production power tubes that
are worth a shit either... If you got a sweet tooth, however, Willy
Wonka can sugar coat some for ya. The End.

Well did you break them in? These companies all sell tubes from the
same manufacturer's and I doubt if they break them in. If a tube
drifts, surely it's not the fault of the retailer unless they didn't
match the tubes correctly in the first place.

No - that would be LV. Listen all these retailers sell the same tubes
from well known companies. You pick the tube that you like you buy it
from whomever gives you good service. The prices of most of these
tubes are roughly the same anyways, so the only thing that matters is
shipping/handling costs. It's a simple as that.

No - I understand that he does that but so what? You can do that
yourself with new tubes.

If you want to order tubes from LV then go ahead - it's a free
country. I personally would never order tubes or anything from him &
that's my right also. No argument here.

Sure you can.

And when you're done, they'll be drifted apart, because
they weren't burned in *prior* to matching. That's the
*point* - matching *after* a 24-48 (72, for some types)
hour aging period insures that drift will be minimized.

And, like I said - there are outfits which burn tubes in,
outfits which do not, and outfits which say they do but
don't. 'Nuff said.

JFYI - The reason electronic things are "burned in" is not for some
sales pitch but because electronics people understand that there is a
certain percentage of parts that are going to fail. Some are DOA, some
fail within an hour, and some fail within days of installing them. for
a convenience to the customer and their selves also, as they have to
ship them back for credit, some more reputable distributors turn their
parts one for an amount of time to help eliminate the failures before
they are shipped. What this means to the customer is that buying from
this dealer, they are more likely to not have to ship the parts (tube)
back for a replacement , wasting shipping back $$ and down time...
You might still get a bum part because shipping can shake loose
stuff also but it does increase the odds in your favor. Also, some
places "match tubes" in unreliable ways. I prefer them to be matched
on reliable equipment at the voltages I will be running them at. Tube
testing can help spot problems but running at 400v or whatever for a
few hours can find them quicker..That's why I buy from LV. Plus his
shipping starts at $6 instead of the $13 some of the others start
at...this is business, not a political nor a guitard issue...

When I had the computer business in Houston, several IBM engineers
were my customers. They told me that IBM dod some serious research on
computers and came up with the fact that computers (and boards) that
were burned in (runing diagnostic software) for 72 hours had an 87%
success rate of lasting 4 years with no problems...Of course, for me
that covered the one year warranty I had to service. In fact, that one
72 hr. waste of electricity got me a rep for reliable machines all
over the engineering world in Houston. I had customers in those high
rise buildings downtown, lawyer firms, oil companies, engineering
firms, and all kinds of personal customers...on businessman from Lake
Charles,LA used to drive to my place for every purchase and repair
because I treated him right. So, it pays to do the right thing. These
blowhards might remember that when it comes to business...politics
and personal beliefs aside...networking brings in customers...talking
down other businesses doesn't...

Actually, I kicked my flat-rate shipping to $7.50.

The Post Office kicked rates yesterday. I did,
however, dump the $3 handling fee for orders
under $50. I hear ya on that, though - I just
ordered a 168-pin DIMM (PC133, 512 MB)
and the shipping was ten bucks. The damn
thing couldn't possibly weigh more than three
ounces. And if you think shipping is expensive
now, wait'll diesel hits $6+ per gallon. Hell,
the station across the street from my joint
had diesel at $4.09 yesterday; I went over
to my friend's store to give his pooches
their daily biscuit, and when I walked out
of his shop ten minutes later, it had gone
up to $4.29. Diesel was about thirty cents
cheaper than regular gas when I bought
my Sprinter; I was paying $2.59 less than
a year ago at highway stations where the
truckers fill up. In the warmer months, I can
get 20-22 MPG in the city if I don't punch
it. (Around 16 if I do. "Speed costs money;
how fast do you want to go?") The price
of diesel affects the price of *everything* -
freight rides on diesel, municipal electric
plants are often diesel powered, and
farm equipment runs diesel.

Time to put up some solar power satellites,
and time to drill for more oil, *wherever* it's

OK - I'll buy that. But all tubes will eventually drift apart.

Question - in a double blind study, could anyone (besides maybe an amp
tech), actually hear the drift in terms of the sound of their amp. I
seriously doubt it. And if you can, could you please quanitfy it.

Heck - most people will replace their tubes w/o even re-biasing, so
whether or not they're matched is probably irrelevant.

Serioulsy - if you can quantify how bad the drift gets & whether or
not it makes a real difference in sound, then I'll start buying my
tubes from you.

I don't know of any of the major online stores that I've dealt with
that do that. Seems like a money loser to me.

OK - I buy that but I've never had a bad tube come into me but then
again, I don't buy tubes all that often.

Why, yes! And after I did they were magically no longer matched,
because a good matching process involves "breaking them in" <before>
they are matched. This is known as the "burn in" process.

I have seen something about burn racks on the JJ site...

I beg to differ. If they're matching tubes without a good burn-in,
it's their fault.

Eventually, and very slowly, too. These drifted after only 50-60 hours
and had a pretty good spread when I pulled them out.

Hummmmm. I noticed it before I measured it. IIRC, they were over 4
watts apart.

Heck, indeed. Russian roulette for amplifiers.

I'll vouch for the product, and I hear he has a good warranty too.

The money-loser is a pair of tubes that are no longer matched. They
lost my business.

I understand what you are saying. Can you name one company (other
than LV) that advertises that they do a burn-in process before
matching? You seem to be assuming that this is standard procedure -
is it?

I couldn't find a thing on The Tube Store's web site saying that they
do this. Did you ask them before you bought the tubes? Did you
contact them after they drifted apart?

I've replaced the tubes on my '62 Vibrolux several times & never had
it re-biased. I've never had the problems you describe with the
sound. Maybe I got lucky?

So what? It just might sound better to the owner. Sheeks!
There's nothing wrong with a bit of signal asymmetry. In fact,
some may prefer the result.

What IS important is tone and reliability and using tubes that
are NOT handled by some senile dildo or some fascist bastard
asshole who hates peace, love and understanding and imbues tubes
with a creepy negative vibe and shitty by-products of greed,
flatulence and evil spirits like the goosing ghost of Runny Realbum.
