Any recommendations for a solid amp tech in the Louisville, KY area?
I'm new to the area and I would love to fine a tech who has experience
with Carvin amps, as I'll be wanting to commission some circuitboard
mods on my newly-acquired Carvin Bel Air. Absent Carvin experitise,
any tech suggestion based on good experiences with tube amp
modifications would be greatly appreciated. I'll also be needing
re-tubing and bias services for my 1966 Super Reverb. Thanks in
advance.

Howdy!

How long have you been here in Louisville, and where are you located?
The good folks at Guitar Emporium http://www.guitar-emporium.com/
steered me to a shop just across the river in Jeffersonville, IN
called Doc Electro http://docelectro.com/ I'm not affiliated with
either shop, except as a customer. They did a nice job on my '65
Gibson Skylark, but I can't say about your Carvin. Can't hurt to give
them a call. Nice folks, good reputation and reasonable rates, from
my experience. Free estimates and 90 day warranty on repairs.

I've got a couple of guitars that need setups and/or repairs. I'm
planning to send them my business again to see how good their luthier
is. Probably after the holidays when I have a bit more cash on hand.
I'll post here with more info then.

Feel free to post here or email me directly if I can help further with
this or anything else. Welcome to Louisville!

Thanks for the info -- I've been in Louisville about 2 years and I live
on the far East end.

I think I'll give Doc Electro a call. Another recommendation I've
gotten is Uncle Albert's in Indy, but I'd rather not drive that far.
Somebody else told me about an individual tech with a good rep located
in Louisville but I've got to do a little more investigating about that
possibility.

Thanks again -- I too will post once I've gotten the work done.

It's all still here, my friend. Where were you in KY? Where are you
now? Much to be said for Southern Hospitality!

Myself, I'm in Southwest Jefferson County. Yup, that's the dreaded
Dixie Highway area. There's a shop out here, also well recommended,
but my experience with them has not been good.

Like I said, try them and see. I'd be interested in your experience.

I'd be hard-pressed to go that far too.

Hmmm. I'd also be interested in another alternative. Please keep me
posted if that's where you end up. It's always good to have options.

At one point there was an amp repair chap in Louisville that did repair
work on Keith Richard's tweed Twin. The same guy wrote an article or two
in a national magazine(Musician?). As old age appoaches, his name
escapes me. Call the Guitar Emporium for a recommendation.

Lexington. From there, Phila., NYC, San Francisco, Dallas, back to the
Bay Area and now S. CA between LA and San Diego. The South does have its
great side. Everyone and everywhere does. AGA doesn't have that history.

Hey Skydog,

How goes the quest? Any luck? I'm interested in your experience with
Doc Electro (if that's the route you took), but would also like to
hear about the other tech you mentioned.

Cheers!

Hey Steve -- It'll probably be after Christmas before I get to this
project, but I'll let you know how it comes out. As for the other
tech, here's a note I got on the Harmony Central amps bbs:

"Look up Steve Wilson, he lives in Louisville and is a great amp tech.
Did work for SRV and many others. I don't know how familiar he is with
any Carvin stuff but he know tube amps well. Here is his number that I
have, it's several years old so I don't know if it's still good or not.
Give it a try. (502)-363-6900."

Happy Holidays --

Hey 'Dog,

I understand "after Christmas". I've got a FrankenStrat project which
needs some work. I've not tried Doc Electro for guitar work yet. I'll
post my experience with the luthier when completed.

I'm not familiar with Steve Wilson, but his phone number places him
here in the South End. I'll try him next time I need some work.

And the happiest of holidays to you,

Steve
