This guy wrote the book on retro blues. He was one of the all time
greats, and yet I can find almost no information about him. Anyone out
there know him, see him play, link me to a website? Do you know what
kind of gear he used? Thanks, GouxMan

Saw him once with Canned Heat at the Starwood in Hollywood about 1975. He was
playing a red 335, didn't see his amp. His real name was Michael Mann. He's
been gone a few years now. Hope that helps.

I don't know if this is still active but there was a page on him on Kim
Wilson's site. I believe the address is www.bluecollarmusic.com but
haven't been there in a year. You can also get his album there. Also
check out Big Al Blake, Junior Watson, Kid Ramos and Rick (LA) Holmstrom
for similar stylings or Louis Myers on the Little Walter recordings for
the genesis of his style. Some of his best work is on James Harmon's
Extra Napkins.

Guitar Player had an obit with a good bit of info shortly after he died. The
"Hollywood Fats Band" CD (the one with the cardboard cover and the art deco
design) has some info as well. The Australian release of that same CD has two
or three more cuts, but I don't know what kind of liner notes it has. In
addition to those CD's, you'll find Fats on two or three James Harman CD's, a
Smokey Wilson CD, the Canned Heat Reunion CD and one of Rod Piazza's early
recordings as well. Supposedly Fats recorded with Albert King and others, but
the ones above are the only discs I've found so far.

Fats was great. There is a Hollywood Fat's "Rock this House" CD out that just
kicks. For guitars he played a Strat and a 335. For amps he used a tweed
Bassman and a reverb tank.

I never got a chance to see him {being on the east coast} but that one record
of him with the bass player from canned heat and the piano from william clarks
band ,has allways been a favorite.Saw Rod Piazza about a month ago they were
great.Rick Holstrom was way better live than on most recordings ive heard.I was
really impressed...stayed out late on a week night.

Thanks for the info everyone. Now, I've been told Fats used a red 335,
and in fact, there is a picture of him holding it on the bluecollarmusic
page. However, when I listen to the album, it SOUNDS like P-90s and a
tweed amp. There is also a picture of him on that page, taken during the
recording of that album, playing a single cutaway guitar with white
pickups.(could these be P-90s?) Can anyone identify the guitar in that
picture? Thanks, GouxMan

P-90 covers can be white.Got a link to the pic?
Btw,I saw Fats playing with Albert King's band in 1971(the red 335).I like all
the gtr players Kim Wilson works with.I particularly like Junior Watson.

I saw him at the Starwood with Canned Heat (opened for Roy Buchanan), and
later at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach with James Harmon, both times
playing the red 335 with I believe a BF Fender amp. Second guitarist with
Harmon was Kid Ramos, who I think is with the T-Birds now. Great player.

That was the one. I seem to remember RB playing his Tele through a BFD. Others
have questioned this. What is your recollection?

I saw him in Santa Cruz,and 1975 sounds right.He had a blackface Twin,volume
on 10,on the rear of one corner of the stage, facing the back wall.
He only used all that volume a few of times in his show, though, almost as a
dramatic effect.From a whisper to a scream.
What a soulful guitar player.

I saw Roy in about '74 and he was using the Tele and a Vibrolux turned
backwards. I have a live video of him from '75 using a Silverface Twin
or Vibrolux, same amazing sound. Wow. GouxMan

I've since learned that Hollywood used amps that actually still belong
to James Harman. They were a tweed Bassman and Bandmaster that had been
recovered in black, hence your "blackface" explanation. GouxMan

It's been so long since that show that I can't recall Roy's amp, my main
recollection is how awesome his playing was!
