This may be a totally dumb comment: but last time I saw
Mr. Betts, he was playing a Strat. This was 1997, and I checked &
double checked. Much to everyone's amazement, IMA.

The classic Allman sounds, such as Live at Fillmore East in '71, were derived
from stock Les Pauls with Marshall heads. 50watts for Duane, 100watts for
Dickey. I read that Duane's unique slide tone was obtained by using the Treble
pickup with the Tone rolled back to about 6. He also did not use a pick when
playing slide according to Dickey.

Was this at their 5-show chicago appearance? I saw them twice
that week, and once in '96, and he was using an ES-335... That would have
been interesting to see him with a strat...

PAFs. Allman played a fifties Les Paul, maybe a 59. Either way, it had
PAFs.
Should only cost you $500 to $1000 each, depending on color.

I'm sure he meant per PAF. I have a pair and wouldn't sell them for any price.

At the vintage shops around here, a black PAF brings $500, a white
brings $750, and a zebra brings $1000. Each. Give or take. Ridiculous, of
course. Go figure. I think it has something to do with the color of the
pickups that were found in the 59 cherry sunburst standards. For a $50,000++
guitar, finding the correct replacement pickup for $1000 is a steal.
Unfortunately, it seems PAFs, unlike amps or strats, are a hard item to
"wait" patiently for, as I hardly ever see individuals selling them.
On these you are more likely to have to bite the dealer bullet unless
you are r-e-a-l-l-y patient.

No, the pickups.

In their heyday they had original Gibson PAF humbuckers in their guitars.
Betts used Seymore Duncan '59's and Seth Lovers later on, I believe. I think
the new Gibson '57 Classics do a good job of reproducing that PAF sound.
Then get a Marshall amp and crank it!

How much are they? Anybody compared them to an Antiquity?
Try Rio Grande Pickups -- Alnico magnets, hand wound in the back of a
friend's garage here in Houston, great tone. They come in several
styles for both Fender and Gibson style guitars. Call Alamo Music
Products at 713-957-0470. Tell 'em Greg sent you.
Greg
They had original PAF's in their guitars. Seymour Duncan Seth Lover pickups
are the closest thing you can get without paying like $500 for an original
set.

Jim,
Slightly sweeter top end, bigger bottom end _without being muddy_ ,
smoother transitions from clean to dirty, and if you have Tom pot them
(he can make them either way), less microphonic (that can be a plus or
a minus depending on your taste and your playing volume).
Look, for some CD's that friends don't know and ask me about, I'm so
sure that they'll like them, that I tell them to buy it and if they
don't like it, I'll buy it from them. I feel the same way about these
pickups. If I knew you, I'd make the same offer.

nah I think Tom Holmes pickups are the closest you can get.

Check http://www.gibson.com to see a goldtop with cream P-90s
But note that P-90 soapbars don't fit into a humbucker mounting ring
(they don't use mounting rings, only mounting screws thru the pickup
into the body cavity or else dogears screwed into the top). However,
Gibson started making a new version (P-94) for retro-fitting into a
humbucker mounting, and they're available in creme/chrome.
http://www.gibson.com/whatsnew/pressrelease/1997/p94.html
If you install a new pair of P-90s (or P-94s), make sure it's a
matched set (magnet poles respectively swapped). That way, when you
have both pickups switched in, they'll act like a humbucker.
