Recently I am having lower back issues and don't want to haul my 60W
tube amp around anymore. I am looking for a light weight solid state
amp for replacement (60W or above). I still plan to use my 1u rack
for effects, and therefore an effect loop is a must. A two channel
amp is preferable in case I just want to plug in and play. My style
is generic rock/pop.

Any insight is appreciated. Thanks.

Al explained on 5/01/2010 :

That's an easy one
Have a look at the Hughes & Kettner Blue Edition 60R.
2 channels, effects loop, spring reverb, open back 1X12 & weighs in at
about 30 lbs.

It has a great clean channel. The Overdrive is a bit of a challange,
but you can get some good grinder out of it.

They also make a 60 DFX...never used it...it has some time effects
chorus, flanger, delay... can't comment on it...never used one.

I hear ya about the back, but if you like the amp, keep it and buy a
cheep hand truck dolly to wheel it around with. You can take more than
one combo amp on long trips, or even a half stack or bass amp plus a
combo. Any move to solid state I have tried to make has been a
disappointment, but that dolly comes in handy for lots of things...
especially PA.

Any BF or SF Fender head with a 2x10 cab ;-} is my fav.

The SS combo of your choice with neo magnet speaker(s) will be very
light.

Also, you could build a pine cab to replace the
original plywood/particle board - save weight.

I would immediately say the Roland Cube 60 but it doesn't have effects loop
although it does have external speaker out and line out.

The other SS amp I would recommend would be the Tech 21 'Trademark 60'.
It's a good sounding SS amp with effects loop and speaker out.. line out.. etc.
The one I have heard and played through (1x12 combo) came with the Celestion speaker and
I think the other option is tech 21's own 'OEM speaker' in there.
It's not too heavy (it weighs around 35 lbs) and it's compact and easy to carry.
(It's a little less wide/smaller than a Fender Deluxe Reverb size amp but it's
11 or 12 inches deep which gives a better bottom end than the DR's 9 inch depth)

Anyways check it out and you might like it.

I agree 100% with the Tech21 Trademark 60 combo. I've owned several of
them. The were very good sounding, reliable on gigs, and easy to carry
around. If you need more firepower, hooking up a Tech21 Power Engine
60 will do the job well and is equally light weight. I would still be
using them if it weren't for those blasted glowing little bottles:>)!

Blasphemy! You might as well just get a Pod.

Just get a direct box with cabinet emulation and use the PA for
amplification. Much easier on your back.

If "generic" is what you're after, you'll get there with a solid-state
amp! But you can get a decent tone these days even without an amp.
Just not a great tone.
