Despite the careful tweaking of my amp tech who has performed magic on my
blackface Fenders and a Rivera, I can't see to get the tone I want out of a
mint Traynor Guitar Mate YGM-3 I picked up about a year ago. It's been
outfitted with NOS EL-84s, and a 12AX7A preamp tube has been replaced with a
JAN 5751 for supposedly softer gain characteristics.
Right now the amp has great bass response, but the mids are pretty scooped, and
it has easily twice the highs I need or want. They are too harsh and "in your
face" for the R&B, blues, and occasional jazz I primarily play.
I'd really love to get this amp sounding great, because it really fills a
wattage/weight need that none of my other amps meet. So, now I'm looking at
the speaker. It has a very shallow frame Alnico 12 that I believe is one of
the Traynor Marsland speakers. Whatever it is, it is very peaky. I'm looking
to get something that keeps fairly tight bass response, but has warmer, more
prominent mids, and "airy" highs. The Guitar Mate has a closed back, but I can
put on a smaller back panel if an open back would help even out the response.
Taking the back off of the amp doesn't seem to help much with the Marsland.
What might work well in this amp? It puts out somewhere between 20-25 watts,
and sounds best pushed fairly hard. Weber? Celestion? Jensen? I have an
extra EV SRO, but it is too big to fit into the cabinet, to say nothing about
the excessive weight!

I'm a big fan of Weber speakers. I really love the 50watt Weber
Alnico Blue Dog a lot. Nice warm sound, and not what I'd call
"peaky", if by that you mean an annoying upper midrange through your
temple spike type of sound.
Hard to beat a Weber, and there're so many choices that it would be a
better idea to email Ted and ask his opinion than to use my choice.
But I'm also having great luck with four 10" Eminence Alnico "Legend
102" speakers that I recently mounted in my Marshall 4x10 cabinet.
I'd love to try a couple of their 12" version of that speaker in a
2x12 cabinet. That's not likely to happen any time soon though.

I have this exact amp.

I went with a 5751 also. Very nice sound in my opinion. What NOS EL-84s
did you go with? I've found JJ/Teslas to be satisfactory to my ears.

Probably the best way to get the mids you want (since this amp only has a
bass and a treble control) is to experiment with cap values a little bit.

That's interesting. Mine only has a partial back panel. Must have varied
by year. FWIW the stock speaker in mine was so flabby it was unusable.

I put a Weber 12F150T (Jensen C12Q copy with C12N-size voice coil and
magnet) in mine and it really brought it to life. The best thing to do,
really, is call or email Ted and see what he recommends for the sound
you're looking for. If you're looking for a speaker that won't break up,
you'll be pleased to know that Weber's higher wattage speakers are still
very efficient.

My fav. speakers are the Vintage 30 and the G12 80. This may sound like
overkill but trust me, they will sound good. In fact, anything with a decent
magnet and a 60w rating (yes 60) should be pretty good. Another fun project
is to remove the back or cut the middle of it out. Once you do that it's
pretty easy to put in a new baffle with a 15" speaker. IMO any of these
things are upgrades as opposed to hacks.
Traynor stuff is rising in value and the GM reverb is one of the best
products they ever made. Sweet tone and nice reverb/trem circuits. The RSC
speakers were manufactured in Canada under licence from Jensen. If you look
at the RSC label you will see the Jensen name or logo (small j in a box).
Good units, but like the US models they can't take a lot of power. If you
want any more info email me.

John

If you can find a Gold (and brown) label Jensen Special Design, you
might like that a lot in the Guitarmate. That's a wonderful amp.
