While they're not as desireable as the non-master ones, I'm sure they
can be made to sound good. I don't know the going price of them. I had
an ultralinear silverface Bassman 135 which I converted the phase
inverter to the AB763 design, where I removed the master and converted
the bias balance to a true bias design.
While it won't make your amp sound like a blackface, it can sound good
on its own merits.

My twin has one and I like it, some people don't. I set it to 10 and my
volume to 3 or 4 for clean, or to 3 or 4 and the volume to 10 for more
distortion. JZ

There is nothing WRONG with that amp that a few parts can't help.

God worked six days to make this place.

Then He made the Super Reverb.

Fender was an after thought.

The master volume era SR's came in a few different flavors. Depending
on which one you've found, this amp may or may not be worth buying.

First, as with any amp, you need to identify the year of the amp. This
will tell you alot about what you have. The quickest way is to look at
the speaker codes. Your code should look like this 137 7615. The first
three digits are the speaker manufacturer 137=CTS Alnicos, the next two
digits are the year 76=1976, and the last two are the week of
manufacture 15=the 15th week of the year. All 4 speakers should match.

Next, pull on the master volume knob. If it clicks out, then you have a
pull boost model. (this could be bad). Shortly after the pull boost was
introduced around 1977, they put in the higher powered transformers.
This does three things. It makes the amp louder, cleaner, and the amp
can't be "blackfaced". To see if this is the case, look at the back
panel of your amp and see what the wattage is. If it's 40 or 45 you're
ok. If it's 70, take a pass on the amp.

Assuming you have a 40 watt, master volume SR. The best thing you can do
is take it to your local amp tech, have the master volume disabled and
have the amp blackfaced. It won't be "exactly" like a blackface SR, but
it'll be much closer. And the improvement in tone is well worth the
nominal cost of having it done.

Pro's of keeping the master volume in place? None really. Unless you're
only planning to play at bedroom volumes. But if this is the case you
should save yourself some money and get a smaller amp anyway.

Hope this helps!

Too bad you didn't include the reference.

I have a silver face Super Reverb with a push pull master volume. When I
bought it a friend offered to take it to Bay State Vintage Instruments in
Boston. He was one of the few people I knew who could tell an amp model
hearing it while blindfolded. He suggested that I get it blackfaced, but
leave it up to the shop owner.
Several hundred dollars later I got it back without it being blackfaced. The
shop owner (James, forgot his first name,) did his magic on it and it sounds
fantastic. What really impresses me is how percussive it is when playing.
People who have heard it often ask me who blackfaced it for me and are
shocked when they find out it wasn't.
As always with equipment from that era, each piece can be worlds apart in
sound and characteristics. I had a feel that it was a good one and was lucky
enough to be right. Good luck.

So what did he do to it?
