noise on new tube amp, normal or not, please?

can you tell me please if it is normal to have un light noise on a tube
amp (peavey 60W Vypyr tube amp). My son bought it 2 weeks ago from music
store, when he plays we don't hear the noise but when he doesn't play even
if the volume button is at zero, we can hear this light noise (it is like
the noise of old radios when we turn the volume button) But here, the noise
appears when we touch to nothing.
The technician at the music store tell us it is normal, but I don't know if
he lied because on many web forums, they tell it's not normal?!?, I don't
know what to do with that?!? :-(
please can you, just tell me if it is possible that tube amp makes kind of
noises not the same of a transistor amp.?

A very slight white noise is to be expected .. does it disappear
when the cable is unplugged from the input jack ?

It is quite the same noise as when we turn button on old radio when it is
not functionning for long time, and we turn it right and left normally this
noise disappear.... there is a crackling noise. The same noise but here
without turning button.

There's a bit of a language barrier here.
Tube amps often make hissing and humming noises. Some of this noise is
related to interference from other electrical equipment in the vicinity. For
example, if you switch the room lights off the amount of noise might
decrease. If you plug the guitar in and touch the strings, the noise usually
decreases. If you plug the guitar cable in without connecting it to the
guitar, the noise might increase. The overdrive channel might be noisier
than the clean channel if you turn up the gain control, and so on. All this
is quite normal. Some amps are worse than others, I returned one otherwise
very good amp because it made too much noise after I had suppressed all the
external interference. My current set up picks up a lot of hissing noise
from the mercury vapour spotlights in the room, but it is as good as I
expect, and both amps are similar. If one was much worse than the other, I
would be worried. Since you have no basis for comparison, your best choice
would be to borrow another tube amp and see how it compares, or take yours
back to the store and make a comparison there.
Crackling noises are *not* normal, and indicate a bad connection somewhere.

Then there may be something wrong. With the jack removed
from the input, the signal is grounded and the amp
should be relatively quiet except for a slight white noise.

Might try another outlet or location. Could be something in your wiring. I
have all my music stuff in one outlet. Not a bad idea to have everything he
touches, while playing, from the same control box (outlet) for safety.
Another thing is to email/call Peavey. They are supposed to be good at PR.

It's true that I don't know much about tube amps, but I have been
using them for about 15 years. I currently own three, a Fender Blues
Deluxe, an H&K Statesman Dual EL84 and a modded Series 1 Epi Vj. None
of them crackle, and none of the many I have tried at my mate's music
store have crackled either. One thing is certain, if an amp crackled I
would expect it to be fixed or I wouldn't buy it. I don't know what
proportion of amps crackle, but if it was less than 5% I wouldn't call
it normal, based on the generally accepted concept of statistical
significance.

is the same noise, you amp is likely good. If not, bring it back for
one of the other new ones that are quiet. And your English is just

PS: How loud is this "noise" in reality. Is it simply there, or really
annoying? How loud is the setting of the amp (played) then.
BTW the preamp of the vypyr is not tube, its a modelling amp any noise
is likely not to originate from the (2) tubes in there. If there is any
change of the noise when switching programs, or if he can affect the
noise with any of the controls (except the master and the "power spong")
then it's most propably in the DSP (non tube) section of th amp.
I'd advise you to take it to the shop, compare it to a line6 Valve
spider and make your own conclusions. If the noise is not acceptable,
return it.
