I was skimming through the letters page of issue 2 of the "Monitor"
magazine and came across a note from someone who had replaced the 4558s
on a ten year old Bandit 65 and found that the sound improved (O.K.,
O.K., I know someone is going to say it could not get much worse!).

Anyway, what are 4558s? I have to admit the Bandit I use is very
reliable and has nice equalisation and enough headroom so that, for a
stage monitor, it works well to cut through all the other sound on
stage. Is it worth swapping 4558s (whatever these little blighters are)?

A 4558 is an Op-Amp. Look for an 8 pin IC.. I guess some of the more modern
ones might have a better slew rate than the original.. I have heard stories like
this also.. I have never seen a Peavey skem, but I would imagine they use the
4558's in the pre-amp stages and overdrive them for thier "saturation" effect..

Colin,
4558s are "jellybean" (cheap and common) dual op amps that are used in
many consumer products, including guitar amps. They are pin-compatible
with many other duals such as TL072, TL082, etc. I often replace failed
4558s with TL072s because the 072s are quieter. The different duals
are not :exactly: the same in all respects (slew rate, type of input,
current sourcing capability and so on); but you can usually sub one for
the other in typical guitar amp circuits.
By the way, I was puzzled by all the posts about the alleged
scarcity of JRC4558s. Just open any mailorder electronics
catalog! :) At my shop, we buy and use them by the fistful.
