Anyone have any info on these? They are 12" guitar speakers, and 2 of them
came in a combo I just got used. Never heard of them, but I wasn't buying
for the speakers. Any info on them would be appreciated...

The Sidewinder had a model number of S12-150. It was a
*great* speaker, in my opinion; possibly the best high-
powered 12" that Celestion ever built. The early
production units had a cast frame (Celestion doesn't do
that much with 12" drivers) but the later ones were
stamped. They used a 2-1/2" (or 3", I forget) edgewound
voice coil, also fairly innovative for a guitar speaker.
They were rated at 150 watts RMS. I have a pair in my
keyboard rig, which uses Celestion drivers exclusively...
two B15-600 15" woofs, two 12" Sidewinders, and two RTT-50
wide-dispersion bullet tweeters. The 12" and the tweets
are in the mid/high boxes, and the 15" are in the low boxes.
The rig is driven (in stereo) by an Ashly FET-2000 for the
lows and an Ashly FET-1500 for the mid/highs, using two
Ashly mono 12 dB/octave active crossovers. A *serious*
kickass rig; it can plaster a Marshall stack to the wall
behind the stage without even getting warm. BTW, the
Sidewinder series also featured a 15" driver built
for bass, the S15-250CE, which had a canvas surround.
I installed several of these in hot-rodded Leslies I built
for various organ-playing customers here in Denver;
this was around 15 years ago, and all of 'em are still
kicking ass. (One of 'em is in the lounge at the Las Vegas
Hilton, crankin' out some *serious* jazz licks for my main
man Al "Hammond" Moore. He's a pedal-kicker, and that
speaker works *hard.* I wish they still made 'em.

Hector:

LV's physical description of the S12-150 speaker is correct. His application
is for keyboard, not guitar. Unless you are playing clean, you probably won't
like that speaker for guitar, as it is more harsh and sterile sounding than
any other speaker I ever heard, EVM 12L included. I had one a few years back,
tried it in a variety of amps (SF Deluxe, Jim Kelley, Mesa Boogie, Soldano) on
a quest for the "perfect" high power 12" speaker that weighed less than than
the EV. The S12-150 fits the bill, even with the cast frame, it has a low
profile and weighs a lot less than the EV. Just doesn't sound the great for
guitar, IMO...

I have a Celestion G12b-150 that has a black and white label on the
back and says Professional Loudspeaker Celestion International Limited,
Ipswitch England. It's a 150 watt loudspeaker and it came in my 1912
1X12 Cab.

Would anyone have any info/opinions on this speaker?

Thanks

Thanks for the info. They are indeed S12-150s. I couldn't begin to guess if
they are early or late models, but they do sound ok clean. Not terrible with
a little crunch. I'm happy with the various speakers I have, though, and
will probably look to find someone who wants them. I don't really need that
kind of power handling, since I never put more than 50 watts through
anything.

Thanks,

Hector

Any info on the Celestion Gold G-12?

Hz range, power rating?

It's built/looks similar to the EVM 12-L; cast frame, huge magnet, too
heavy!

I had one of these in a Carlsbro Sidewinder combo. I later used the speaker
with a Jap Boogie clone. The tone was rather hard and piercing. Using the
same amp with a 2 x 12 with Celestion G12Hs was a huge improvement - the
sound was able to breathe. I got the impression that the speaker was too
heavy to function well at 50 watts.

I bought a Marshall combo (JCM 800/4010) that had one of these. I loved it!
In fact, I liked it so much, that when I bought a Soldano head, I put that
Sidewinder in my 2 x 12 cab (along with another Celestion) for some more low
end "chunk." It works great!!

I've always wondered why we don't hear more about these. Even though they are
no longer made, they are still great speakers. I like the tone of it better
than Vintage 30's, with my Soldano, anyhow.

Since we're on the topic of Celestions....how 'bout a G12K-85??
I have a Peavey 2-12(slant, almost as wide as a 4-12) that has these in
it and that thing will eat up most 4-12s. Great sensitivity and tons of
low end. Never saw or heard of these anywhere other than that cab.

I've got a pair of those in my Town and Country... very agressive
sounding speaker. Do yours have the vents on the back of the magnet?
Mine do.. heard that some might not.

Standard speaker for GT Soul-o series of amps. Designed as a keyboard speaker,
IIRC.
