Anyone out there with any experiemce with the Lawrence L-490's? All input
welcomed, especially if you've seen/heard/put them on a hollow/semi-hollow
guitar.
thanks
My only experience is with
the bridge position of my
"Reverse Fat Tele"
partscaster. That said,
it's an outstanding
pickup in that guitar,
P-90ish but not as harsh,
some resemblance to a
Jazzmaster pickup too.
I'd have a chat with
Becky about putting them
in a Starfire, though --
a Guild semi-hollow is
a very different beast
from a Tele with a dense
alder Fender body and an
all-maple neck!

I've heard nothing but good things about both the Lawrences and the Z-90's,
but if they are both very P-90ish (with their own personality, to be sure)
the BL's are half the price. I'm leaning towards trying the BL's, but just
wanted as much feedback from other users as possible before making the
switch. If the HD's or some other pup is that much better, or if the BL's
simply don't work that well in a semihollow, I'd love to hear about it.

BL's still got a multi-week
lead time, but HD's borders
on the ridiculous!

I've had P90s all my guitar playing life, I always have P90s. I've got
Rio Grande Bastards in humbucker sized holes in my Hamer Studio. Those
are very good P90's. I've got the Fat Bastard in the bridge. It is
definitely overwound, but not ridiculous or muddy - still it may not
be what you're looking for. But the standard Bastard is an excellent
rendition of the classic P90, and should do well for you.
If anything distinguishes it from an actual p90, and it's a little
hard to A/B test it given the different guitars, these seem a little
clearer sounding. Still throaty, but no phlegm. (how's that for a
gross analogy)
Unfortunately, I can't compare these at all to the pickups you're
considering. (Oh, these are not "noiseless" or even "low noise"
they're just P90 clones.... kinda noisy)
Ron
I think Rio Grande now has a noiseless P-90, called the hushbar

The L490 humbucker sized P90 replacement is a *great* sounding pickup, it has
the P90 vibe and is completely noise-free. It has the output of the P90 but
with less "rasp" or "crang". If that is what you are looking for, then a
straight single is a must. Harmonic Design is supposed to be the best in that
realm (V90).
I have several models of Bill's pickups, L280s (both Tele and Strat), L290s
(both Tele and Strat), L450, and L500XL. I also have a Q-Filter I have yet to
try out. Have not tried the Harmonic Design though.
The BEST part about the Lawrence PUs vs. *all* of the others is that they are
cheap - like under 50 bucks. For that alone, you should try them. Plus, the
Lawrence family is just great to deal with. Real nice people, pleasant, honest
and straight forward.
Unlike some people.
Best regards,
Paul
Hey Count, let me ask you something about that Starfire IV.
Is it one of the new Guilds, or is it an oldie!!!!!!!!

Semi-oldie. It's a '77, nice stripey sepale mahogany with a natural finish.
It's actually a -D model, so it has the factory optional DiMarzios, which
aren't terrible, but will end up transferred to a solid body guitar (a guild
s-300A-D which has had it's diMarzio's replaced...I like those pups better
on a solid guitar). The only thing I don't like about the starfire is the
adjust-o-matic roller bridge, but it's easy to put a t-o-m on there. The
73-80 SF-4's are extra nice because they picked up a couple of features
after guild discontinued the SF-V, like the block inlays and master volume
pot.
I'm a big fan of Guilds...great bang for the buck and one of the few good
values left in MIA older guitars. You can really get some unbelieveably
good deals on some of the ugly pointy guitars and basses from the
'80's...great sound, playability and quality as long as you can tolerate
strange angles, curves, points and finishes. I've got a bubblegum pink 1984
Guild Aviator...setneck superstrat style American guitar, light, plays like
butter...paid $203 including the OHSC. the color is ugly, but there is
nothing around for $200 that can come close to it. Sort of the opposite of
a polished turd! Maybe my daughter will get it when she gets older...

These are the greatest pick ups of all time.
I wish you have those!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Those were the first proto types I had gotten from Aaron Newman when he
was working on them for Guild way back when the shit was the shit.
I had hoped you had the first generation of those pick ups in your
guitar.

Those small humbuckers are amazing. I don't own a guitar with the small
buckers (yet)...they are considerably sweeter than the larger HB-1 pickups
used from the late '60's on. I'll have some someday. I also like the older
P-90 style pickups and the DeArmonds that preceded the small humbuckers.
I understand Newman's company made some of the Guild amps back in the early
'60's...now those are some peculiar designs!
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...............................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These look like the ones!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
