In Remembrance - Jess Oliver.

by Ampeg on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 12:09pm

The entire Ampeg family is very sad to report that Jess Oliver has passed
away. Ampeg simply wouldn’t exist were it not for Jess. As the inventor of
the Ampeg B-15, Baby Bass and a litany of other groundbreaking Ampeg and
Oliver original designs, the entire music industry owes a great debt to Jess
and his creations.

Please join us in offering condolences to his family. This would also be an
excellent time to celebrate Jess’ many accomplishments by using this post to
comment on your personal experience with Jess and his amps. His amps will
undoubtedly serve as a living testament to the man who was brave enough to
“turn up the volume.”

Jess Oliver (born Oliver Jespersen) was the creative genius responsible for
many of the classic AmpegTM amplifier designs of the sixties, the most
notable being the ground-breaking B15N Portaflex bass amplifier. Jess left
the company in 1966 and formed Oliver Sound Company. Jess ceased production
of his own line of sound equipment in the 70's, but continued to operate his
repair business, under the Oliver Sound Co. name, for more than 30 years.

It's that Guy again...

I'll never forget the 1st time I saw one of his amps raise
the head out of the cab, by a motor. I laughed till I
heard the sound that came out of it. Then I shut up.

IMMSMW, he also had a hand in the Canada brand 'ORBIT'
that just never made it, yet the designs were amazing.

I had heard that up till the SLM days of Ampeg, the brand
paid Jess a cut out of profits, as they knew that without his
vision, there would never of been a 'AMPEG' brand product.

He designed NEW ideas, unlike the 'amp builders' of today
that just tweak some one's old design, and added their name.

Thanks for the info..yet I am sad about it...

It's a shame amp designers
almost always wind up in
the largely thankless
repair business -- same
thing happened to another
first-rate Ampeger, Dennis
Kager. It's sort of like
getting a record deal and
a hit or two, but then
winding up as just another
struggling player in a
cover band -- not that any
of these guys would ever
complain, but it's a
damned shame.

Only in the MI industry --
the very idea of a design
engineer at HP, IBM, or
Cisco winding up repairing
PCs or routers for a living
is simply unthinkable, same
goes for a designer for GM
or Toyota doing brake jobs
and changing timing belts
to put food on the table.

Very sad to hear. I was lucky enough to have an Ampeg B-15 Portaflex back in
the day, which I regret selling. It's a sad day for fans of his work, but
the world is better off for his being in it.
