Why do the guitarist for Bush put what looks like electrical tape over the
pick-ups of thier guitars? What would it actually do? I would do it myself to
try it out to find out, but i'm just to lazy and never think about it when the
strats in my hands. Anybody ever try this out?

I doubt that they have a good reason. Try it and see if you can hear a
difference. I don't listen to those guys, so I'm not going to try it.

As far as I know the tape reduces the electrical hum from single-coils. If I
remember rightly Gavin Rossdale plays either Jaguars or Jazzmasters, but I
have no idea what pickups they have.

Where is the tape wrapped? If it's around the edges of the bobbins, they
may just be trying to protect the windings...I had a weird tendency to
somehow get the pick stuck down in between the ends of the bobbins on
neck humbucker, ended up packing the gap with silicone to avoid really
messing things up...

How can electrical tape possibly reduce hum? It's plastic and has no conductive
or shielding properties.

The only thing I can think of is that it might help reduce some mechanical
vibration, which contributes to unwanted feedback. That's all that pickup
potting does, so maybe this is quick and dirty potting substitute. Just a
wild guess...

Yeah, well that makes sense, the reducing hum idea doesn't.
