How do bands like Def Leppard, Queensryche, Rush, AC/DC, and Journey (don't
laugh, Neal Schon kicks ass), get that beautiful sound?
Do the 2000 series Marshalls have so much gain they are only usable on the
clean channel with the gain way up? ... Is the 2000 series clean channel
equivalent to previous model's lead channel, or do they just come with crap
tubes?
I love distortion and am not a Fender amp/clean tone only guy.... the amount
of distortion on these 2000s isn't bad, it's the quality of it. What is the
secret?

That's because they are buzzy.

It won't help much.

Yes he does. Listen to the tone on the solo for "Lights" - beautiful.
Sounds like a Strat neck into an old marshall.

Old Marshalls

They have too much preamp gain and not enough soul.

No. The "previous" model, the JCM900 doesn't sound nearly as "good" as the
JCM2000 series IMO. You'll have to go back to the early JCM800 models to
approach the tones that you're looking for. Better yet, check out an early
70's head.

Old Marshalls.
And I'm a Fender clean amp kinda guy. But old Marshalls are the tone of
(hard) rock and roll.
They use older amps with less gain stages.

I am pretty sure both guitarists in Queensrych during the Mindcrime
era were using racks based on an ADA MP-1 pre amp.
he sure do.

With Lifeson in Rush, it depends on what era you're talking
about. Honestly, one of the best live sounds I heard from him was when
he was using the Marshall 30th anniversary three channel models. They
sounded amazing with Strats and PRS. He has used Plexis, HiWatts, rack
systems and almost everything else. Check some Rush fan sites for
detailed rig info - it's out there, just requires some websearches.
A poster who used to frequent a.g.a (Tim Tube/Tim Swartz)
related selling a bunch of vintage tubes to AC/DC prior to a tour -
old Marshalls and old tubes there. If you listen closely, they're not
actually using tons of distortion, it's controlled rather than wild.
A little bit of distortion in several stages generally sounds
less freaky than a pile of dirt all from one stage.
Main guitar is an ibanez SC420 (nice for clean/blues), and a Peavey
Wolfgang (great for rock)
I use a tube screamer to push the amps crunch channel
i set my bass at about 12, mids almost full and prescense and high on 8. I
dont use any of the "grunge" scoop buttons. i use a combo of the TS and the
amps gain to get my distortion - which is about 5 on both... it works quite
nicely.
I use a BBE 482 (makes sound nice and tight, "sparkly") and a H&K replex in
the loop (nice tube driven Tape Echo simulator).
marshall 4x12 with GT75's (hope to soon replace with a Mesa Recto 4x12!)
I also only run two power tubes.
This is a KICK ASS setup (for me at least). I can get early VH, and all the
other tones i used to drool over. i'd say the key is use as little cables as
possible, and use as little effects(digital) as possible - multieffects seem
to kill my tone. I'm still looking over a good chorus/flanger for my setup -
im thinking i may buy the mxr m117 flanger (would love the choralflange, or
TC Chorus/flanger but they are a bit expensive)
My vintage amp (1973 superlead) doesnt have an effects loop, is too damn
loud, and always has to be repaired. Also, the 2000 has a far better clean
channel and is much more versatile.
My point is that great tone can be found in this amp, i think most people
are just prejudiced towards the 20+ year old amp they grew up with ;)

I agree. Lifeson has used numerous amp setups over the last 25+ years.
( R&R Hall of Fame plug_on_now ).
At one point in the 80's it was widely reported he used those damned
G&K solid state amps.. I gotta agree since many of the late 80's
LP's/CD's just had this tone.. It was OK, but it wasn't the "Working
Man" cranked Marshall tone of the mid 70's..

There you have it, once again, folks. Another one sees the light.

At this point I am saving toward a 20 Watt Soldano Astroverb (hotrodded
JCM800 circuit I hear), and will get a Hotplate if it has to be cranked too
loud to get
the distortion I want.
I did a small amount of research on Alex Lifeson... the bit I looked at said
he had 2 100 Watt Marshalls spread across 3 cabinets, later he had 2
Marshall 100w combos and 2-HiWatt 100's. Not sure what came after that.

The only info I have for Queensryche is from '95... about 7 years after
Mindcrime- so I guess the following is what they used
on Promised Land......
What I really want to know is what amps and effects they used on Empire.
Perfect tone to me is the last solo in "Della Brown"... I've tried a Boss
delay, but maybe they are using some rack effect that is more of a echo than
a delay? Are there echo pedals, or is delay and echo considered the same
thing? I would think delay would simply replay your sound, while
echo would replay your sound with the addition of a little reverb and the
volume would fade away gradually.
Is this an accurate description- I am guessing here....
I need one of these don't I? (from below): Lexicon PCM-70, Eventide H3000,
Roland SRV-330, Roland
SDE-330, tc electronic TC1210 spatial expander, BBE 440 sonic maximizer.
Ka ching! $$$$$$$$$$
Faxology: Chris DeGarmo
(Guitar World Jan. 1995)
Amplification: Marshall 100-watt JCM800s, Bogner "The Fish"
preamp, Soldano preamp, custom-made 4X12 cabinets with Celestion
speakers.
Guitars: Varied ESP guitars, Gibson Les Paul Custom, '73 Gibson
Explorer, Gibson Les Paul Classic. Taylor and Martin acoustics.
Effects: Lexicon PCM-70, Eventide H3000, Roland SRV-330, Roland
SDE-330, tc electronic TC1210 spatial expander, BBE 440 sonic
maximizer."
------------------------------------------------------------------
Chris: My home rig was the 1X12" Celestion boxes that I have with
a Shure SM58 crammed right in the cone. At different times I was
using 100-watt Marshalls, Marshall power sections or Bogner or
Soldano preamps driving Celestion speakers in 4X12" cabs. We had
a collection of greenback 25 watts, and Vintage 30's (which are
70 watts).
thanks!
