I just took my 1980's model solid state "Fender Stage Lead 2" to the
repair shop to get fixed. The repairmen said that all the pots and
knobs needed to be replaced. He later called me and said that the
replacement pots were discontinued by Fender so he couldn't finish the
job. I wanted to know is there anywhere I can get these used or is
there any other pots made for another amp that are compadible? I wanna
get this fixed because it sounds really good when its working right.

However, you're going to find out something very interesting
about taking "advice" from clueless audiofucks like this mikey
character. Let us know what you find out at New Sensor. Say
hello to Ralph for me.

Not at all surprising, considering who told you to call.

OK, on to some real problem-solving. Your amp is a solid-state
type, which means the pots all need to be the correct size and
mounting style to fit, since they will be mounted to a circuit
board.

First - it is *extremely* unlikely that *all* your pots are bad.
Unless they are all broken by having been slammed into
something, or they are all sheared off even with the bushing,
probably only one or two will be bad. If the correct ones
can't be had, a savvy tech can use wire-lead pots turned
upside down, with flying leads that go down to the PC
board.

Take the amp to another tech and get a second opinion.

The next step, however, is for you to e-mail the service
department at Fender and ask them if pots are still
available for your amp. Make sure to give them the
*exact* model number, and the serial number.

Bear in mind that unless you are in love with that amp,
you may not want to have it fixed; if it is in bad shape
your repair bill may well exceed the amp's worth.

I don't do SS amps any more - I hired a dude who
does 'em for me, and he may know more about this
than I do. I'll ask him when he comes in tomorrow.
We mostly service stuff for stone pros - road shows
and whatnot - so we don't work on much cheeser
gear. (No offense. ;-)

I definately know the value on the amp is not high, but I would be
willing to spend a little to get it going again rather than just scrap
it. I did find someone who said they can get the parts I need. We will
see if this person can do it and if not I may may have to let it go.
Thanks for your help.

Add an other thing to a suspected failure of all the potentiometers in an
amplifier or any other device. If you use any sort of contact cleaner on
your pots - read the label first! If it says that it removes carbon
deposits DO NOT USE IT on any pots. The pots use a carbon wiper (the little
arm that turns with the shaft, center soldering lug), and the part that that
is attached to the 2 outer solder points of the pot are also a carbon film.
So one can easily see why using this type of contact cleaner is extremely
bad.
