Hey I'm looking for a clean loud amp that will not distort no matter how
loud the volume setting. I know that this is a weird request in this day and
age of high gain and distortion, but I am a jazz player and distortion is my
biggest enemy when it comes to live sound. I play out 3-4 times a week and
currently use two 100 watt Polytone amps running in stereo which i mic with
sm-57's and pan hard left and right though the mains. But I can't help but
think that there is a powerful combo amp out there somewhere that will give
me a crystal clear full sound without having to mic for all but the stadium
type venues. I have tried the Marshalls and the like, but they all distort
at very low levels. Any suggestions will be considered. The main thing is,
it has to be clean and loud with no distortion. Thanks in advance for your
suggestions. Best Regards...Mark

Mark,

Have you considered Mesa Boogie, specifically any of the older
Non-rectifier models or perhaps the Mark IV? Lee Ritenour used to use a
Mesa Quad Preamp, which might be another option to consider too. FWIW, I
have always heard/ read that the Polytones were THE clean jazz amp. Good
luck in your search!

You might look into the line of Fender amps from the late 70s that had
ultralinear output sections. They typically are very clean and have
just a little more output than the "normal" ones. Steel players like
them for that reason. Most guitar players *don't* like them for that
reason.
Other than that, maybe a PA power amp with a guitar preamp on front of
it? certainly no lack of power there, but not a combo either.

Buy a Fender or (HERESY) a solid state amplifier.

They are powerful, cheaper and more reliable!

I am with you on the clean thing though.

Now here is a cheap, powerful, clean amp - get a Crate 150 watt Power
Block.

Loads of inputs/outputs, clean, powerful - £49 for an amp hey!!!!!

I run it into a 1 x 12" Celestion G12H.

Best of luck with your search dude!!

yep, I second the suggestion for the ultra-linear Fender.
Specifically, I'd suggest a late 70's (around 1978) 135 watt Fender
Twin Reverb with the JBL D120F speakers. Might need to restore it
when you get it, but I can't think of a better amp that fits your
bill.

Warning, they weigh almost 100 lbs, but worth the load. I got one. I
love it better than a "blackface" Twin Reverb for ultra-clean linear
loud guitar. I restored mine to look and sound brand new inside and
out -- total cost was about $1000, but the speakers alone might cost
$500 unless you're lucky on eBay.

let me know of questions.

I'm using a '74 Ampeg VT-22 for clean; It'll peel paint after it gives
you a hernia...

have you tried a Roland JC120?

You might want to try an old Musicman amp.
