Does anyone have firsthand information about the
waterway between Lake Superior and Lake Nipigon
via the Nipigon River?

Is the Nipigon River navigable?
What is the controlling draft along the route?

Is it marked with navigation aids?

Are there any facilities up there, marinas, lodges,
restaurants, etc?

And assuming you can get up there to Lake Nipigon,
what is Lake Nipigon like?

Only in a canoe, and then you're pushing it.

Nope

Very beautiful, very remote, very, very uncrowded and only partially charted.
The only way to get a boat of any size up there is on a trailer.

So a 15-20 foot outboard would be unlikely to be able to transit.
Darn.

I guess I am not surprised. There are hardly any floating aids
left in the North Channel.

Where is there a good launching ramp? Rocky Bay?

From the size of the river as shown on the Ontario Provincial Highway
Map, I was hoping there would have been a bit more water in it!
It looks rather wide on the map.

Is the water level at Lake Nipigon the same as at Lake Huron, or
are there controlling dams?

I notice that just north of Lake Nipigon, most of the rivers run
north into Hudson Bay. Does the current in the Nipigon River flow
south into Lake Superior, or does Lake Superior flow north in Lake
Nipigon?

Jim, if I'm not mistaken, the Nipigon River is one of the Great Lakes
diversions we've mentioned here in other posts. It USED to flow into Lake
Superior, but is now dammed somewhere along it's length and the flow is now
reversed and at least part of the watershed now drains towards Hudson bay.

Sorry Cap'n, but you are mistaken. The Ogoki diversion flows through Lake Nipigon and INTO Lake Superior .........

From ...The Great Lakes Atlas  http://www.epa.gov/glnpo/atlas/glat-ch3.html#11

"At present, water is diverted into the Great Lakes system from the Hudson Bay watershed through
Long Lac and Lake Ogoki, and diverted out of the Great Lakes and into the Mississippi watershed
at Chicago. These diversions are almost equally balanced and have had little long-term effect on
levels of the lakes."

You can also view a map of Great Lakes Diversions at .....    http://www.great-lakes.net/gis/maps/
