Good mornin'

it seems that there is a minimum of Corel Painter (specially on v9)
tutorials on Internet. Otherwise, I am searching at the wrong places
and under the wrong names. No search machine appears to be
very lenient with tutorials there on.

While knowing this is of the subject for this ng, I do ask the
question here 'cause many PS users (of which I am one) also make use
of Corel Painter for the sake of different effects.
Although CS2 is truly a wonderful program,
it's a known fact that Corel is still ahead re painting possibilities.
I am also searching in the bookshops for a relative tutorial book
without finding what I am looking for. Maybe a Internet order will
be the answer.

The search is for ideas on different brushes and basically
tutorials on changing photos into paintings by using
Corel Painter IX. Any help (links) will be appreciated.

Dave,

You are correct about a dearth of Painter stuff on the Web, or Usenet. There
were two NGs for Painter, but they are long since dead - people claimed that
Corel killed them, because they wanted folk to go to their Web fora for all
things Painter.

You might start with http://www.artistrymag.com/docs/classes.html, to look
into Painter stuff. This is the URL for Karen Sperling's "retreats," but I'll
bet you can navigate to her tutorials from it. She's done several good Painter
books over the years, and also training CD/DVD's. Years ago, I got one of her
earliest Painter books (~v3) and the CD was MAC only. She kindly replaced that
CD with the PC ver and pointed out that the publisher just messed up, as the
CDs were supposed to be X-platform, not MAC-only. She knows her stuff, and
cares about her readers and Painter users.

Many thanx for your reply. And for mentioning the possibility of why
there are no news groups on such a popular topic. It keep on being
funny.

And another thanks for the *very useful* URL. Funny I could not pick
it up on a search machine; and useful because there seem to be
important links on the bottom of said page - tutorial CD's.

Over the weekend I visited a popular (chain) bookshop, where
an assistant tried to convince me CorelDRAW and Corel Painter
is the same; while trying to sell me a book on CorelDRAW 9:-)
Not even 12 but 9:-)

Thanks again Hunt, and keep well.

Take a look at Corel's Painter Essentials. It's specifically designed to turn
digital photos into paintings.
http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=Corel3/Products/Display&pfid=
1047024307407&pid=1047025757941
At $69 for the download version, may be a good place to start learning
Painter.

And how do you start learning if tutorials is as scarce as chicken
teeth? (wonder whether you know the saying:-)
Thanks Laura, I spoiled myself with version IX.

You might also want to look at this book: The Photoshop and Painter
Artist Tablet Book by Cher Threinen-Pendarvis. The main focus is on
using Wacom tablets with both programs, but there are good examples and
tutorials on various techniques.

Cheers Lee .

I did a Google search on Painter IX Tutorials and turned up many pages of
tutorials for it.
There are also quite a few Painter IX tutorials on the Corel website.
http://www.corel.com/painterix/training/index.html
as well as books and CDs.
Painter Essentials 3 includes tutorials in the program. You can download a
free trial from Corel's website.

All Don Seegmiller's tutorials & tips is on my harddrive.
And I question the 'many pages of tutorials for it'.
My searchmachine includes 10 searhmachines (Speed Search v 5)
and none of these 10 turned up many pages of tutorials on IX.
Wonder if anyone else would try it:-)

Right after PS CS2 became available, I bought 3 books on it.
Adobe Photoshop for Photographers - Martin Evening
How to do everything
and Classroom in a book.
I have some of these versions for CS(1) as well.
Now, Cyberspace is flooded with tutorials on CS2.
Maybe I should not be in such a hurry buying the same on Painter.

And maybe I should start a news group on Corel Painter.

Unfortunately, Painter, all the way back to Fractal Design (is that the
originator? Does't seem to sound quite right!) has been a "poor-step-child"
and not enough has been written about it. It's a wonderful program, and just
keeps getting better. I would not be without it. Even the major interface
changes wrought by Corel didn't really hurt it, and with IX, it has developed
into a closer fit with PS. For every 100 books on PS, I'd guess that there has
been 1 for Painter. Some of the old "Painter WOW" books are still viable,
though one has to inturpret between the mechanics of the older ver and IX (
whatever).

If you do NOT have a tablet, do youself a major favor, and get a Wacom. You
will not be disappointed.

There is a Painter 8 Wow book by Cher Threinen-Pendarvis for something
in the vicinity of $35. And she seem to be an expert. I searched the
same title on vIX but could not find it.

Guess I'll have to get hold of a tablet. Tutorials on creative work
does increasingly refer to tablet work. Somewhere I checked up
prices and Wacom (the Rolls Royce of tablets I assume) is quite
expensive.

Glad to hear you are a Painter fan as well:-)

The Painter IX WoW book was published in May of 2005, according to the Corel
site which has it for sale, along with other books and training materials.
http://www.corel.com/painterix/training/books.html

A search on Google turns up at least 10 pages of Painter IX tutorials:

1.www.paintercreativity.com
this is an ad for a book for sale.

2.http://www.artistrymag.com/
this is mostly tutorials on 7 & 8
but also on IX and all Karen Sperling's
available tutorials is already in my archive.

3. www.corel.com/painterix/training/tutorials.html - 17k
This link is available from Painters helpfile.
Only single tutorials - mostly (very useful) tips

4. www.fxguide.com/article223.html&mode=nested - 33k
This is a review. Not a tutorial

5. • Includes text for Painter 5
• Includes text for Painter 6
• Includes text for Painter 7
• Includes text for Painter 8
• Includes text for Painter IX

That is the first 5.

But here is good links as well.
Only not as much as you thought -
You gave me undermore 'Painter IX: Oil Paint Cloner Tutorial'
I'll search further.
Thanks for it.

8 is a followup on 7
9 is empty and
10 says 'Corel Painter IX Tutorial - Coming Soon'

This much for the search on Google which delivered at least 10 pages.
Don't you click on the links to investigate?

Hi Dave.

Did you already check the guides by www.lynda.com?
I receive her guide for Painter 8 with a bundle by AutoFX, and now I saw
that she also wrote a new guide for Painter IX.
You can see some samples here:

Hope this helps.

Hi Socius

and thanks a lot for your reply.

No, I was not aware of her site, and opened it now,
and spent some time on her movies. You are working on
her bundle for Painter 8, so you do know her work.

I am still working on (trying to) calibrating this new 19" LCD screen
in order to get trustable colors on it:-)

Thanks again therefore. It is in the morning hours now,
and I'll be on her site this afternoon.
