They are both excellent but they are not the same kind of
program. Now with the natural media brushes and Image Ready,
Photoshop 5.5 is venturing into Painter territory.

Painter is very good for simulating painting and other effects.
It is also capable of making animation But it is not as
versatile as Photoshop, and even though 6 shows great advances,
I think it is still not as mature a program as it could be. The
interface has improved but it could be better. Also, there are
issues with it being sold to Corel.

If it comes down to a "which one" choice, I say Photoshop hands
down.

If you have nothing better to do...

I'm biased but I say Photoshop.

If you have a traditional art background, using paint on canvas, and
all the associated tools and techniques, and you create art, rather
than just edit existing images, Painter 6 is probably the closest
you'll get to that on a personal computer.

If you work with photographs, color correcting, touching up,
compositing, etc., definitely Photoshop. If you're comfortable
creating art in an nontraditional, more abstract way, then Photoshop
offers you great power. Photoshop is a better prepress tool for
professional printing.

If I had to have one, it would be PS, but it doesn't hurt to have
both.

It depends on what you like to do. If you like to work on photos,
Photoshop or my favorite, Corel Photopaint 9 If you like to start from
scratch on a blank canvas, hands down, Painter 6. Actually Corel Photopaint
9 is the best, since you get the best of both worlds, although you still
can't do text on a path like in Painter, but you can't do that in Photoshop
either (oh you can, but it's a bite!)
As far as Image Ready 2, who cares!?!, It's a waste of space!!
I'm sorry edjh, but Photoshop can't hold a candle to Painter in that
regard. Also the issue of Painter 6 being sold to Corel makes Painter a
stronger contender. Soon Photopaint/Painter will be the "industry standard",
if it isn't already.

An OWNER of Adobe Photoshop 5.5, Metacreations/Corel Painter 6, and Corel
Photopaint 9.

You may be right about the Corel buy. I'd wait and see. I've used
some Corel stuff and I am not as taken with it as you are.

One thing to consider is that Painter works exclusively in RGB,
so
if you are doing anything for print media you need PhotoShop
along
with Painter.

Image Ready solves the problem that Photoshop had before,
virtually NO web functionality. Maybe not as good as Painter,
but
I still say that for all around versatility, PS is the way to go.

Gads, I don't think so. It's more like Painter 6 being sold to Corel will be
the death of it. A shame, really. And nope, anything with the Corel-stamp
on it, has a long way to go to become "industry standard."

What "industry" would that be? :)
