Using PS6, is it possible to color a scanned black-and-white image
(orginally a very old photo) and produce resonable results?

Yes, I've done it - it's hard-going at the start but the results can be
emotional sometimes.

Using the 'hue' and saturation tools to 'create' colors for masked areas is
possible in photoshop. How reasonable the results are will depend entirely
on your own skill. There is no automatic tool so the colors will be what you
decide to make them.

Yes it is. Go to google and do the following search : +tutorial +photoshop
+toning.

Hope this helps.

It is like a photo coloured with water colours.
Do you think you can get any better with a black and white image?

Didn't seem there was much you could do in blackmagic that you couldn't do
in Photoshop.

Of course.
Everything can made with photoshop.
Every plug is unnecessary, but it makes our life easy.

what benefits did you see in it?

I'll let you be the judge.
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/jecar/jpgs/Untitled-1%20copy.jpg

I originally made a fantasy photo of one of my granddaughters with a
program called Fantasy. It basically just offered images with masks for
inserting the face of your choice. This one was like a Shirley Temple
picture and I (not so expertly) inserted my granddaughter's face, which
was in gray scale. A week ago, or so, I decided to colorized it. I had
been trying a colorizing tutorial of an old car and seemed to get pretty
fair results. I used a method of making overlays and erasing around
what I didn't want.

I am not knocking 'Black Magic' because it is a heck of a lot faster
than the method I used. I also can't remember the setting I used in
'Black Magic' when I was trying it out. I tried to use it again, but
alas, my trial time had ran out (dang, I hate trial times). ;-)

Myself, I think my colorizing is better (comments welcomed), but I liked
the quickness that 'Black Magic' had to offer.

Your photo is good, but I think coloured photos are only interesting if
it looks like a black and white colored! You don't really need a very
good work, but a very quick one. It's not necessary to spend too much
time in it!

You almost need to "dumb down" the color in the arms and hands. to match it
a little bit. otherwise, good attempt!

Hmmm....I would think that the reason to colorize would be to hid the
fact that it was originally black and white.

Thanks for your comment.

Looks that way. Cause I thought that program was kinda cheesy. Couldn't find
the value in it.
