fading pictures ?

Can anyone tell me how to fade pictures into eachother or just how to fade a
normal picture?
I add 2 pictures to the layer & select and mark an area I want to fade
within eachother & then what??
Or take alook at

at the top of this site, you can see Britney Spears head faded, how do you
do this ?

Sounds to me like you want to lower the opacity of the layer. The opacity
slider is on the layers window.

If you want to merge the two images you must rreduce the opacity of the upper
layer..
if you want to merge part of the image with the other , you must do this:
select the area you want to make transparent of the upper image and reserve a
zone for the mergin effect (the zone the two images are merging ) then make a
feather effect at the uper image with an amount of pixels the same as the zone
you want the two images merge.... then eliminate the selection you have ( push
supr key) and the effect that apears is that the upper image comes from
transparency to opacity in a gradient , so if you put an image below you´ll
have the two images merged....
