how the hell do you remove or edit a filter ?

I am a casual but fairly proficient photoshop user....last night i was
trying to do an animated gif and was using the render/light burst?
filter and alter it over time....i then realized that i could not turn
off or edit the filter applied (i copied/pasted) in order to achieve
some animation....with filters in the past i usually just turned them
off from history but then you lose anything done after this.....
