Feathering question

can anyone tell me if it is possible to use a texture as the background that
is faded into when feathering an image? thanks

You would do this the same way as you would fade to another image.
Basically create a new layer and make your texture on that layer, put
the
texture layer below the picture layer, select the outside area of the
picture to be faded, feather it and delete it.

I'm not sure if that was what you were looking for. It seems like you
are looking for a way to set one of your colors in the gradient settings
to a texture instead of a color. I don't think that is possible, but
there are many other ways to get the results you are looking for.
