Hi All,

I'm using CS2. I take a pile of pictures of books I'm selling, and run
them through Photoshop before posting on the web. I do lens correction and
color correction, then want to save as a jpg, at a "7" quality level.

After doing my corrections, File > Save As always comes up saving as a
photoshop file (PSD) by default. I have to go to the dropdown list and
select JPG. Once I type in the name I want, I have to set the quality level.
I think it comes up at the setting I used last time I was in CS2.

Is there a way to have Photoshop do a File > Save As as a JPG by
default? Further, is there a way to set the quality level to a default
setting?

I know these seem like little things, but they add up time wise.
(Annoyance wise, too.)

Thanks for any help,
Max

Have you tried "Save for Web"? I think it retains settings from the
last save.

That's because you are creating layers or some other things that can't
be saved in a JPEG. Photoshop will never try to use a default that would
cause you to lose data, such as layers; if you create layers, alpha
channels, spot channels, or any other elements that can't be saved as
JPEG, Photoshop will not default to JPEG.

I knew that was why, I just hoped there was a way around it. :-) I'm getting
really good at typing <Alt>-F, 'A', <TAB>, 'J', <Shift>-<TAB>. That all gets
me to a save as JPG, ready to type a filename. What I wouldn't give for an
old fashioned keyboard macro...

You may want to look at a program called Auto Hot Key it's a Windows application that allows you to write keyboard and mouse macros. http://www.autohotkey.com/

For reference for people searching answers to this same problem -

When making changes, simply flatten the image and then save it, this will stop the save as PSD dialog box opening when saving or doing a Save As.

Also, JPEGS are 8-bit, so a switch from 16-bit is needed if you had
been working with 16-bit RAW files, TIFFs, or PSDs.

the quick way is save for web. No selection required, if properly sized.
It will save itas a gif.

*Save for web* is useful if you don't want to convert your working copy
of 16-bit, ProPhoto RGB, TIFF, PSD, etc to 8-bit sRGB, JPEG. However,
the output from *Save for web* is not necessarily a GIF. It is what you
select, GIF, JPEG, PNG-12, PNG-24, or WBMP. For most folks that is
going to be a JPEG.
