I do a lot of editing of PDFs (and other files) in Illustrator, then
Save the final product to PDF format.
When I do this, I check the "Display PDF" option in the Save window;
the Saved file normally pops up in Adobe Reader; I review it and click
the red Close button, which Saves it from Reader; and I end up with
back in Illustrator with the same doc still open, so I can do further
editing and repeat the Save process if I want to.
Occasionally this process follows an unexpected path, where Adobe
Reader doesn't open (or maybe opens and pops closed immediately), and
I end up looking instead at a "CMaps" file or folder. Seems to happen
either if the PDF file has an unusually long file name, or has an
unusually large amount of complex vector stuff in it.
If I close this CMaps window, the PDF file still seems to be Saved OK
nonetheless, and I end up back in Illustrator as usual, so nothing
destructive seems to happen (sometimes the Saved file ends up with a
truncated file name followed by some random characters).
But I'd appreciate any education on what's happening here, and if
there's anything that should be done to avoid this?
