I recall a tool that converts raster images to vector, but I don't remember
the name of it or if it was a plugin or a standalone program. What are some
programs/plugins that will do this and where can I buy them?

Thanks

Corel's Trace which comes with the Draw Suite can do it.. but it also
depends on the quality of what you're trying to trace out - it may take you
longer to have an app trace out the bitmap into a vector file and then clean
up that file than it would to create it from scratch in your vector app.

Adobe Streamline or Macromedia Flash.

XaraX has a built-in tracing program. You can download a tryout from

you may recall me experimenting with this before, see
www.surefiregroup.uksingers.com then go to band members to see how I fared!
I'm not sure if file size is important to you, but if you are trying to keep
things as small as possible, as I was, for Flash purposes, then one good tip
is to use the Photoshop median blur tool too remove detail from the images,
this makes vectors a lot smoother and more simple when you trace. Freehand
(v8 onwards?) certainly has good trace tools that specify colour depth,
detail etc. There is also a cleanup tool that helps squeeze them a bit
smaller aswell...

Steve.

Cybermesh, a Photoshop Mac plug-in, allows users to save grayscale images as
3D models in DXF format, making it an ideal companion product to 3Dmodeling,
rendering and animation applications.

We are a group in india who specialize in vectorizing. we do an
excellent job of vectorizing images manually using coreldraw /
illustrator / freehand.

Anyone needing this service for vectorizing logos/arwork/school crests can visit :

Ever hear of a program by Adobe called Streamline?

Or...if I need to "vectorize" something...I [and I believe most here] could
do it themselves...

Good Luck!

Well I wish him luck too. There isn't much business to be had here but I am
not convinced most of this crowd could do its own vector graphics. Ever
tried Streamline? Unless its improved you don't always get what you want.
But if you try sometime. You get what you need.
Sorry. : p

Yeah...I have and use Streamline...and altho it does add a lot of
unnecessary points, it can still save time...I use it only for stuff that I
have not done directly in Illustrator first, or other line art.

And all I need is what I had...

Guys, Streamline is only as good as the person who uses it.
Streamlining a low res image will result in crap.

Nearly all of my cartoons are scanned into Photoshop at 300 dpi or
higher and after a bit of cleanup, Streamlined. Streamlining a 72 dpi
image just isn't practical.

There are preferences that perhaps you guys need to tweak if you aren't
getting the results you want. Adjusting the tolerance tighter will give
you better fidelity to your original, but you have to live with a higher
file size and more points. You make the call.

Streamline works just fine.

Like Jeff suggested you have to start with a high res. image so
that it has something good to work with.

I have had good luck with streamline, but I do wish Adobe would rev it up
and bring it up to date a bit. I would love to see it as a plug-in for
either Illustrator or Photoshop.

Hi,

We are a group who have worked extensively on vector graphics and
specialize in jpg to vector conversion.

i would like to point out that - no matter what you use to convert
bitmap to vector - you still land up getting a vector file that is
huge (in terms of size). We manually digitize using coreldraw and
offer it as a service to various companies

So do get in touch with us at : thi...@vsnl.com or see our vector
service at http://www.indiaeye.com/vector.htm for more information

thanks
