I would like to make a gradient, in which one of the colors is replaced
by transparency. So, it is possible to blend from, let's say, black to
transparent. This would be very handy, because I want an object to be
visible on one side and blend to white on the other. I tried it with a
clipping mask, which I find not so handy, but it doesn't work. The
object consists of all kinds of colored stripes.

Opacity mask.

One method:

Make a copy of the object (one object) and Paste it on Front.
Fill the copy with a black to white lineair gradient.
Select both objects.
In Transparency check Opacity Mask.

Play around a bit, not sure what your object is.

Maybe I didn't understand correctly, but if I do this I get the same
result as a clipping mask (the left side of the object is black and it
blends to transparent.
I don't understand why you can't just make one of the colors of a
gradient transparent.
