I'm trying to figure out how to merge two anchor points from two different
closed paths. Is this do-able?

I'm not sure if I'm certain of what is your trying to do (it would be easier
if I could see your monitor!) but have you tried using the pathfinder
pallet? Select both closed paths, and click the button that looks like two
shapes are joining...I might be way off base...

I tried that but it adds a path segment that really screws up the image.

Now that I think about it, one path is closed and one path is open and it's
adding a path segment to the open path to close it and I don't want that. I
just want to be able to tell illustrator to take any two anchor points, no
matter what type they are merge them. Now that I think about that, it might
not be doable. How would you merge the straight anchor point and the curved
one and still retain editable state?

If you have any ideas, I'm interested but I'm kinda thinking that what I
want to do doesn't make computational sense.
