I need to make a special pattern as a border for mostly ovals and curves. A
pattern filled object will not cut it, no pattern swatches. The object
needs to repeat along the path and curve with it, like text would. I do not
have the artwork, just a photocopy to re-create from so I need to create a
single piece of vector art and paste them around a path to make a broder.

This is in Illustrator 8. I also have Freehand 7 if this is easier in that.

Please respond ASAP.

Thanks,
Bill

Not to sound like an idiot, but I wasn't clear by your message...Do
you know that you can STROKE a path with a pattern? Other than
manually copying and pasting and distributing around the path, I don't
know of any other way in Illustrator.

Freehand 8 is another story. You'll have to look into macromedia's
website for details, but I'm pretty sure it can kind of do it for you.
I haven't played with it enough. We mostly use illustr

Thanks for your reply.

I know I can stroke the path but it's the automatic functions that are
killing me. I heard somewhere that you can place objects along a path.
This would benefit me so I could overlap where necessary. The automatic
feature lets you space out but not space in -space%. I want to overlap
because my line stroke's are capped. Imagine an S-shape with caps. Yeah
that's right, all it is, are fattened line strokes with caps. The design I
got is so simple and stupid. If you saw it you would laugh. I would laugh
too if I didn't need to make plates tommorrow.

It is like a rope design. The only problem is that I am trying to get away
without redesigning the little S-shape thingies around the ring. I sliced
the paths to make a continous string but the stupid automatic spacing is
putting white space in between the design.
I believe that I will have to make an outlined shape that I can slice
manually. I also didn't want a million path points slowing up the layout. I
thought I could save the time by using line strokes but I guess not.

I appreciate your help.

You can also take the art you need placed on the path and drag it onto the
brushes pallette, and make it a Pattern brush. Then you can use the
paintbrush tool and do whatever you want with it. You will have to play with
it, the spacing and all that when you create the brush. This works really
well for text type stuff, as long as there are no gradients. Hope this
helps. Rob.
