How to split a dashed path into separate objects?

(my apologies if this gets posted twice-- my connection went down
during my first attempt to post, and I don't see it in the list)
(I am using CS2 version 12 on OSX)

I'd like to draw a path, make it dashed (this I can do), then perform
outline stroke separately on each of the path segments. But outline
stroke operates on the entire path, ignoring the dashedness.

Can illustrator split my dashed path into separate objects, one per
dash?

The best solution I've come up with so far is to perform the split
manually with the scissors tool. This is time consuming-- for one
thing, I have to make two copies of the path, one dashed and thicker
(and some other color), the other not dashed. I align these, put the
undashed one in the foreground then use the dashed one as a guy for
where to cut. This works for proof of principal but is a lot of work
if I have a lot of dashed curves to do.

Seeking a better way,
Thanks for any help!

Dashed stroke convert to outline
Select all. Now, Object\Ungroup.
You get two object in layers panel (compound path, former dashed
stroke) and path (white rectangle with no stroke)
Compound path (former dashed stroke) in separate objects:
Object\Compound path\Release...

Thanks for the help, but this is not working for me, or perhaps I am
doing it wrong.

I start by drawing a stroke with the pen tool. Then I use the
selection tool to select it, I give it a stroke weight (6 pt), no
fill, and using the stroke window I specify 16 pt dashes and rounded
ends. At this point, the dashed lines appear as I would expect.

Now by "convert to outline" do you mean "Object:Path:Outline
Stroke" (I don't see anything else applicable in the online help)?
After doing this, What I see is the entire, single, path has been
converted to an outline path the same as if I hadn't have dashes. I
see that the layer window now has a three-level hierarchy for this
thing (layer1, group, path), where as before it had only two
(layer1,path). Then ungroup gets that back two a two-level hierarchry
(layer1,path). But neither of these entities seems to allow
"Object:Path:Release". The layer window doesn't appear to be showing
any other objects in the document at any stage of this.

The only point where I think I might have gone wrong is where you said
"convert to outline". Did I do what you intended or did you mean
something other than "Object:Path:Outline Stroke"?

Thanks,
Frank B

Yes, I mean Object \ Path \ Outline stroke, (Illustrator CS3)

I have been uploaded *.jpeg on the link below where you may see
how I did it in my Illy. I hope that helps...

Interesting. That does not work for me. I create the dashed line,
and when I do Object \ Path \ Outline stroke I no longer have a dashed
entity, I have a single line. Where you show 11 dashes as your
"AFTER", I just end up with a single object; length is the length of
the original line (plus whatever my stroke weight was, because of the
rounded end); width is what my stroke weight was; no stroke; fill
black.

What you've described and shown is how I expected it to work, and
apparently it works for you. Maybe this is a difference between CS2
and CS3. I'm using CS2 12.0.1 Student Version.

I guess all I can say at this point is that I appreciate your help,
and I'm guessing I am stuck with using the scissors.

Ok, first make a stroked path with dash checked in the palette.
change the parameters to your liking.

Next, go to Object, Flatten Transparency. Apparently this is the only
way to make the Dashes an Object.

Excellent; thanks Gary.

To recap, what works (for me) is
(1) draw my stroked path
(2) specify stroke weight, dashedness and cap types
(3) Object, Flatten Transparency
(3a) make sure "convert all strokes to outlines" is enabled (I assume)
(3b) OK
(4) Object, Compound Path, Release
(5) Object, Ungroup

Thanks very much for your help,
Frank B

To think, 30 years back, one would just grab a pencil and do it
in a second! <g>

A piece of bacon and a sausage were frying in a pan when the sausage
suddenly exclaimed "Phew, it's hot in here!". The bacon then said:
"Wow! A sausage that talks!"
