I primarily use Adobe Illustrator for producing digital images. An
Illustrator pet peeve is that the border gets in the way visually when
I have images or text that extend beyond the page border.

Unlike other illustration programs, Adobe has made it exceptionally
hard for me to find the preference box to turn off the page border.
Has anyone else figured this out, have the same problem, or have
solutions?

Please email...

Go to 'Document Setup' in the File menu. In the Artboard section choose 'Custom'
in the dropdown menu, set the size to 120" x 120" and deselect 'Use page
setup'. Close document setup and double click the hand tool to see the
complete artboard with the 'Page tiling' that shows you what part is printed.
To move 'Page tiling' use the page tool that's behind the hand tool. To
hide the tiling choose 'Hide page tiling' from the View menu.

That doesn't do it. It gets rid of the tiling, but leaves the page
outline there...

Sorry, I thought you meant the page set-up border. Can't you make your
document set-up page size larger than your copy area?

Try looking in your menu at the top of Illustrator, there are many commands there. You seem to be the type of person that just wants an answer and does not want to do his own work to learn. There is a menu command to turn off the "border" so it is not seen. Explore your software, learn what it can do.

@Mike, where exactly can I turn off the "border" of my artboard? I've looked through all the menus and haven't found the option you mention.

The solution I'm planning to use is just hide artboards, create box as a background and boxes as artboards, block them. Done.

I'm having the same problem with Illy CC2014. I want to turn off the document boundaries (it's much smaller than my art board)

go to View then "HIDE PRINT TILING". I had the same problem as it is in the way of my design layout. It's a company template I am working off of and needed it out of the way since I am aligning many line shapes and text. Hopefully it is what your looking as it was much smaller than my artboard as well.
