Viewer for .AI files ?

I know this must be a very newbie question...

I'm trying to open a .AI file for viewing. I read in some web site that
it was the extension for the Adobe Illustrator files.

So I installed Acrobat Reader 4.05 but when trying to view the .AI file,
it tells me that the file doesn't start with %PDF.

This is not a .PDF, it's a .AI file...

Is there any special reader for .AI files ? Is it free ???

Unfortunately, the reader for .ai files is called Adobe Illustrator.
Available wherever fine software is sold.
