I'm a Photoshop "oldie" and Illustrator "newbie," so please excuse if
this is trivial.

I have a path defined. I'm trying to follow a tutorial that instructs me
to copy a portion of the path which will be used to guide text
placement. I cannot figure out how to do this. I've tried the selection
tools and variations on them, but I usually wind up copying the entire
path (or nothing at all...) or simply dragging the original. How can I
snip out a copy of a portion?

Thanks,

Jason

Use the direct selection tool (white arrow) or direct selection lasso
tool (lasso with white arrow) to select the control points of the
section of the path you want to copy, then Edit->Copy. If there are not
control points at the ends of the part you want to copy, add them using
the Add Anchor Point tool (pen with +) first.

what do you mean with: "make the return host the same as my last name"?

I would like to copy only the shape of the selected control points (selected with the white arrow), not the whole path.
When I drag the selected path with the direct selection tool it copies the full shape, not the selected subpath...
What am I doing wrong?
