On a pc, with Illustrator 7 I was able to open some files that had the
.cmx extension; they are on one of those mega Corel clipart galleries
cd collections I bought. With Illustrator 8 it doesn't know what to
do with them.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Hmmm, I have Illustrator 8. I just opened a Corel CMX file with it. To
do so, I clicked on File -> Open, then navigated to the folder where
the file was. I scrolled down the formats list and selected Corel CMX.
It opened right up. Only problem was that it came in upside down and
backwards. :)

But it did come in otherwise OK. I think the file had been created in
CorelDRAW 6.0, which may have something to do with the problem.
CorelDRAW 6.0 was a buggy mess.

Now the curious thing to me is that I thought Illustrator 8.0 could
open CorelDRAW 7.0 files. Yet, when I scrolled down the list of
formats, the only Corel choices were Corel CMX and Corel CDR 5/6. No
CDR 7 listed. Not that it matters much to me -- I quit Corel with
version 6.0 anyway. Just curious what happened to my CDR 7 import
filter.

I don't have a CDR 7 import either. Not that I'd ever use it anyway.

I just looked it up to make sure I wasn't dreaming. I was sure that
the pre-release information about Illustrator 8.0 from Adobe's web
site had said CDR version 7.

I couldn't find the web site easily, but it's in the manual, page 55.
It definitely says CorelDRAW version 5, 6 and 7.

So now that I know I didn't make it up, where is it? I know I did a
full install ("Custom," selecting all choices). Like you, I'm unlikely
to need it, but Adobe owes me a filter!

The Image Stream Filters.aip plug in that shipped with Illustrator 8 was
supposed to introduce Corel draw 7 file support. However, this plug in will
not load properly from an NTFS partition. The problem may also occur with
FAT32 partitions. The Image Stream Filters.aip plug in for Illustrator 7
does work on NTFS though.

Peace,
Adamz

I know I saw it in some Adobe literature too.

In version 7 they pre-hyped a DXF filter that never made until version 8.

I think Adobe has pulled a fast one. Yes there is a Corel input filter
for Corel's exchange format (CMX) for Versions 6 & 7 and only input
filters for CDR Versions 5 & 6.

They all show up on my file open menu. I can't get the CMX filter to
work, I think it is a problem with FAT 32 & NTFS

Running Il8 no additional bulid ifo shows up in Help About.
