He's in trouble for hiding the documents, denying he had them and displaying classified
ones to people without clearance.

Factually, what he is NOT being tried for is taking or having the documents.

The indictment is for obstruction and improper possession which he
would realised when he got the subpoena. The search is evidence of
possession but says nothing about how the documents arrived at his
home. I have my opinion, but I have no evidence to prove my opinion.
